Russell continues to celebrate the exponents of popular song. The show features John Rox, Perry Como, Mickey Katz, Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Hylton and many more.

A little-know songwriter, John Rox, provides the fodder for Russell's first exploration, on the discovery that his real name was John Herring. Thus, after Perry Como's performance of Rox's Surprising, comes another of his, sung by Margaret Whiting and Jack Smith.

Russell recalls that Jeri Southern was originally Genevieve Hering. Her version of Don't Look at Me That Way leads to the Mickey Katz comedy version of Shrimp Boats - Herring Boats Are Coming. We don't leave the ocean there, either, for we discover that Ella Fitzgerald's Smooth Sailing was recorded exactly 60 years ago on this day.

Discovering that Arnold Fishkind was bassist on that gig prompts a reminder of Fishkind's most famous moment - the session when Bing Crosby, Jack Teagarden and Mary Martin immortalised The Waiter and the Porter and the Upstairs Maid.

This being one of a small body of songs that was written - words AND music - by Johnny Mercer, we hear two more Mercer solo efforts: Dream and Something's Gotta Give.

Two famous records made exactly 70 years ago, by Duke Ellington and Artie Shaw, follow. The subject of 6/8 tempo songs is illustrated by a newly re-released Jack Hylton track and emphasised by The Radio Revellers' I Love the Sunshine of Your Smile, before more marine thoughts are provided by Alma Cogan (Dreamboat) and Sarah Vaughan (Summertime).
