This week, Russell devotes almost the entire programme to the life and work of Sir George Shearing, who died in February.

Though most famous for his instrumental work with his ground-breaking quintet, George recorded with many singers and Russell selects examples. These come from his earliest days, with Stephane Grappelli and Beryl Davis; to his most recent, with John Pizzarelli.

He also includes notable sessions with Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole and others - as well as one rare example of his own vocal prowess.

In addition, Russell reviews recent recordings by two more British pianists - Sir Richard Rodney Bennett with Claire Martin and James Pearson with Gary Williams.
