Mozart and the Baroque

Lucie Skeaping reflects on Mozart's fascination for the music of the Baroque in his later career, including his transcriptions of Bach's Preludes and Fugues for string quartet.

As part of the "Genius of Mozart" season, Lucie Skeaping reflects on Mozart's fascination for the music of the Baroque in his later career. The programme features his transcriptions for string quartet of J.S. Bach's Preludes & Fugues, and his 1782 "Baroque" Suite in C major for piano. The programme also looks at Mozart's re-orchestrations of some of Handel's large-scale works such as "Acis & Galatea", and how some Baroque-like features found their way into pieces such as "The Magic Flute", the Requiem and the "Jupiter" Symphony.
