Turner, Barber, Sibelius - Part 1

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Symphony Orchestra under David Robertson in Mark-Anthony Turnage: Hammered (world premiere). Barber: Violin Concerto (soloist - Gil Shaham).

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ PROMS 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Andrew McGregor

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Symphony Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, David Robertson, conducts two enduring works by composers who fashioned a new aesthetic out of Romantic roots, and the world premiere of a new commission in his 50th-birthday year from jazz-inspired Mark-Anthony Turnage, who has resolved not to write 'an old man's piece'!

The expansive melodies and edgy pace of centenary composer Samuel Barber are at their most powerful in the Violin Concerto, played here by Israeli-American virtuoso Gil Shaham. Sibelius's Second Symphony traces a path from terse drama to great affirmation.
