New statistics, released exclusively to 'Asian Network Report Special' reveal the true extent of the burden of heart disease on ethnic minorities in the UK.
According to new research from the British Heart Foundation and the University of Oxford, rates of heart disease are far higher in Asian men than in the wider population yet they are twice as likely to miss out on life saving care.
In this documentary Sony Award Winning DJ Nihal, who lost his own father to a heart attack ten years ago finds out why so many British Asians are dying from heart disease and hears from people who survived heart attacks that 'came out of the blue'.
Whilst getting ready to celebrate Diwali with her family Hina ended up in hospital fighting for her life. She assumed she wasn't at risk - a vegetarian , she never drank alcohol or smoked and regarded herself as 'quite ' healthy .She was told by medical experts that just being an Asian meant she was at risk.
For Haider , heart disease did run in the family but he didn't think aged 33 he would be a victim. And Zaib, who not only suffered a heart attack herself but also lost her husband and son to heart disease.
So with British Asian's more at risk of heart disease, Asian Network Report Special asks why aren't they getting the care they need and what more needs to be done?
