Jez Nelson presents a double bill of French jazz: the Sophia Domancich trio, which features the American rhythm section of William Parker and Hamid Drake, plus duo Donkey Monkey. Both were recorded during the Partager festival that took place at London's King's Place in May 2010.

Pianist Sophia Domancich is a key member of the French improvised music scene, and in 1999 was the first female recipient of the French Musician of the Year award from the Academie du Jazz. She has also been closely associated with musicians from the UK's Canterbury Scene since the mid 80s, when she began playing with drummer Pip Pyle, bassist Hugh Hopper and saxophonist Elton Dean. For this concert she's joined by the formidable, and much in demand, percussionist Hamid Drake and double bassist William Parker, both from New York.

Donkey Monkey comprises pianist Eve Risser and drummer Yoko Oshima, who draw together influences from European jazz and contemporary classical music with Japanese noise rock. They describe their hard hitting sound as "dense and frenetic hi-speed free boogie woogie improvisation".

Presenter: Jez Nelson
