Curios

Jez Nelson presents a concert by Curios, recorded exclusively for Jazz On 3 in April at The Vortex Jazz Club in London. Over the past three years pianist Tom Cawley, double bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Josh Blackmore have earned a reputation as one of the UK's most exciting young bands. Playing Cawley's compositions, which are often inspired by his love of Formula 1, their distinctive sound encompasses propulsive and complex rhythms, lyrical melodies, and reflective ensemble playing. Recently, as heard in this concert and on their new album The Other Place, they've added subtle electronics to the mix.

Tom Cawley can be heard playing alongside Peter Gabriel, Gwyneth Herbert, Guy Barker, Charlie Watts and many more, and was a founder member of Acoustic Ladyland. He also finds time to be professor of jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music, where he taught his current band mate Josh Blackmore. Curios won Best Band at the 2008 Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Jazz Awards.
