Does the growing gap between rich and poor matter?
With a government commissioned report concluding that inequality is greater than 40 years ago, Graham Stewart asks if you feel worse off?
A report commissioned by the Government has concluded that the gap between rich and poor in the UK is wider now than it was 40 years ago. Labour has made tackling inequality a priority, but the National Equality Panel (an independent group of academic experts) says that while there have been some successes, there's been no narrowing of the difference in incomes between the wealthiest and the least well-off. Disparities in the pay and conditions of men and women, and minority groups, are said to remain "deep-seated and systemic". Are you better off than you were in the 1960s? Does it matter if some people, like bankers and celebrities, are earning obscene amounts of money?
Graham Stewart takes your calls, texts and emails.
