Catherine Bott presents a live programme from the Sallis Benney theatre at the University of Brighton, as part of this year's Brighton Early Music Festival. The theme of the 2008 festival is "These Fairest Isles - early and traditional music form the British Isles and Ireland", which opens up fascinating links between the shared roots of early music and traditional/folk elements. Early medieval music and certain folk traditions are more or less contemporary and feed into each other with 'art' music having a powerful effect upon the 'folk' tradition. Later on in the 17th and 18th centuries many composers are taking inspiration from folk traditions. Artistic Director Deborah Roberts will be on hand to explain more about the BrEMF events calendar, and there will be live music from Welsh harpist Gwenan Gibbard., Irish singer RΓ³isΓn Elsafty with celtic harpist Siobhan Armstrong, and Scottish fiddler Hilary Michael, along with medieval English songs from Clare Norburn and Joy Smith.
