Annie Laurie is probably Scotland's best-known love song and was a great favourite with soldiers during the Crimean war. The evocative ballad is now sung and loved all over the world but the story behind the song is less well known. John Cavangh reveals the real Annie Laurie who inspired her sweetheart to write the lyrics and the Lady who much later adapted his words and gave them the beautiful melody we know today.
