Mark Helias' Open Loose

Jez Nelson presents a gig from veteran New York bassist Mark Helias' trio Open Loose, featuring Tony Malaby on saxophone and Tom Rainey on drums and performed at the Wardrobe in Leeds in February. Ubiquitous on the New York scene, the group's performances move between group improvisation and Helias' structured compositions.

Having taken up the bass at age 20, New Jersey-born Mark Helias embarked on an international career with the Anthony Braxton Quartet, and went on to play with key jazz figures such as Edward Blackwell, Dewey Redman and Don Cherry.
