Four is company for Mike and Wendy.

Ruth's meeting with Vince from Natural England went ok. Their main problem will be finding locally-bred plants for the hedging. David and Ruth joke that the burst water main might have been an act of god. It's to Alan's advantage that the village hall's out of action. Bert's aware of this too, and isn't happy.

Bert comes second in today's ploughing match and gives David a bottle of whisky - partly for his birthday and partly for David's help with the Massey. David wants Bert to save some ploughing for the open day. Bert's delighted - and suggests he could give a talk about ploughing too.

Mike's looking forward to a bit of privacy with Wendy in the restaurant and can't believe it when David and Ruth walk in. Ironically their tables are next to each other. After introductions, Ruth diplomatically suggests she and David move to another table, and they all settle to enjoy their meals. Even though Mike rambles on about cows again, Wendy enjoys his company and wants to arrange their next date. When she suggests the theatre, Mike admits the last thing he saw was the village panto! They say goodnight with a tentative but tender kiss.
