1. The Visitor

A visitor places a young Flemish painter's love for his master's niece in jeopardy. 17th-century mystery read by Ian McDiarmid.

In 17th Century Leyden, young Flemish painter Godfrey Schalken's love for his master's daughter, Rose, receives a setback when a mysterious visitor comes calling one night by the name of Vanderhausen...

An unabridged reading of Sheridan Le Fanu's supernatural tale in two episodes.

Read by Ian McDiarmid.

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) is regarded by many critics as the greatest master of the English ghost story.

A product of the decaying Anglo-Irish culture of the early and mid-19th Century, he sums up in his work better than any of his contemporaries the fears and dreads that may haunt the sensitive individual.

Produced at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Northern Ireland by Lawrence Jackson.

Made for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 7 and first broadcast in June 2005.
