FAIRR
FAIRR is an investor network that leverages the power of capital markets to create more sustainable food systems. Despite being responsible for 14.5% of global GHG emissions, using 66% of antibiotics worldwide and being the world's largest anthropogenic land user, the livestock sector has historically avoided scrutiny on these issues. Why? Due to a lack of data, and awareness. That’s where FAIRR comes in. FAIRR drives change in the food system by empowering investors with the cutting-edge data they need to drive company-level transformation. FAIRR also facilitates dialogues between food companies and investors to demand action on urgent issues like climate change and deforestation.
Flour to the People
A direct response to the overwhelming demand for flour during lockdown and a strategy for creating local food resilience - the main objective of this project was to work alongside community food hubs and bakers to ensure that vulnerable communities across Scotland have access to more nutritious flour and the skills and knowledge to transform it into delicious bread. It used breadmaking as a means of social interaction, particularly valuable during a time of forced physical distancing, and engaged communities in the movement towards a healthy, sustainable, equitable and locally-controlled flour and bread supply.
pladis Back to Farm Initiative
pladis, home to much loved brands including McVitie’s, Carr’s, and Jacob’s is encouraging farmers to plant wheat varieties that, until recently, had virtually disappeared in the UK. Its Back to Farm initiative was introduced in 2013 to encourage UK farmers to prioritise growing the Group 3 wheat required for biscuit production, which had fallen out of fashion among British growers. This was important because with the right wheat, pladis could throw its weight behind farmers and better support British agriculture in a bid to supply the country with 360,000 tonnes of biscuits each year. With locally sourced wheat, pladis could also reduce its environmental footprint by removing the necessity to source wheat from countries like Canada.
