Each year Radio 1 celebrates some Teen Heroes: young people who make the world a better place. This year it’s Greg James’ job to track down our Teen Heroes and he needs your help!

A Teen Hero could be someone who has made a difference in your family or community. It could be a teenager who’s overcome a challenge in their own life, or acted with bravery. It could be a young person who’s been a champion for an important cause or been a brilliant fundraiser or volunteer.

We will read through every one of your submissions. We’ll recognise five Teen Heroes with exciting surprises live on Radio 1 Breakfast. We’ll also do our best to give a small but powerful moment of recognition to everyone who fits the title of “Teen Hero”. We want the country to know just how many Teen Heroes there are out there, and hear about the important work they’ve been doing.

Entry Rules
1. In order to nominate someone, you must be a UK resident (including Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) and not be a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ employee, employee of any of its affiliates, close relative of any such employees or connected to the awards directly or through a close relative.
2. Any UK resident (including Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) aged between 13 and 19 by 14th November 2021 is eligible to be nominated, except Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ employees, employees of any of its subsidiaries or affiliates, close relatives of any such employees or connected to the awards directly or through a close relative.
3. If you are under the age of 18, you must get your parent / guardian’s permission to make a nomination, and your parent / guardian must complete their contact details in the nomination form.
4. If the nominee is under the age of 18, you must get the nominee’s parent / guardian’s permission to make a nomination, and provide a name, email address and contact number for the nominee’s parent / guardian. We may contact the nominee’s parent / guardian as part of the application process to obtain directly their permission to the nominee being considered for an award.
5. You should not submit personal data relating to another individual without first obtaining their permission or permission of the nominee’s parent / guardian if the nominee is under the age of 18. For what is considered personal data please visit the .
6. Nominations can only be made online by accessing www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 from the 9:00am 8th November 2021 and must be received no later than 6:00pm 14th November 2021. Any nominations received after this will not be accepted.
7. The criteria to qualify for nomination and on which winners will be selected are:
The nominee must have acted in one or more of the following ways:
(i) acted selflessly,
(ii) inspired others,
(iii) acted with courage and bravery, or
(iv) ensured a positive outcome for an individual, family member or their community.
8. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 team may contact the nominee or the nominee’s parent / guardian if under 18, to obtain their consent to the nominee being considered for an award. Both the nominator and nominee (or their parents / guardians, as applicable) may also be contacted to verify facts and/or events. This should not be interpreted as anything other than an information gathering exercise.
9. Further on-going research will be undertaken by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 team. The nominee (or parent / guardian of the nominee, as applicable) may be contacted and asked for relevant contacts to assist this research. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ reserves the right to disqualify a nominee if such contacts are not provided.
10. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 team will select a shortlist of nominees to present to the judging panel who will select the winners.
11. The judging panel will select up to 5 (five) winners based on the criteria stated above.
12. The shortlisted nominees and the person who nominated any shortlisted nominees will be required to keep selection confidential. The winners will be selected and notified and all winners must agree to keep details of the award confidential until after the public announcement. This may require agreeing to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ-standard confidentiality agreements.
13. The winners will be publicly announced on Radio 1.
14. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s decision as to the winners is final. No correspondence relating to the awards will be entered.
15. Each of the winners will receive the Teen Hero Award. There are no prizes, no cash alternative and the award cannot be sold or transferred in any circumstances. Unless stated otherwise, no costs, charges, fees or expenses shall be covered by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.
16. The names and ages of a select number of nominees may be read out on Radio 1 during the final Teen Heroes show (e.g. “Oliver (14) who raises money for homeless charities”).
17. Nominees must agree to take part in any post-award publicity if required.
18. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ reserves the right to: (i) vary these Terms and Conditions, including but not limited to the opening times of the awards; (ii) disqualify any nominee who breaches the rules or has acted fraudulently in any way; and (iii) cancel the awards, at any stage, if in its opinion it is deemed necessary or if circumstances arise outside its control.
19. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, its sub-contractors, subsidiaries and/or agencies cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any other problem which may result in any nomination not properly registered.
20. Where relevant, these awards accord with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Code of Conduct for Competitions and Voting, details of which can be found on the .
21. Winners must not make reference to their receipt of such award unless in a form or after a date approved in writing by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. Any breach of this clause may result in disqualification or revision of the award.
22. To the extent permitted by law, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will not be liable for any loss or damage (whether such damage or losses were foreseen, foreseeable, known or otherwise) including financial, reputational loss or disappointment.
23. The promoter of the awards is the British Broadcasting Corporation and these terms and conditions are subject to the laws of England and Wales.

This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal data about you during and after your relationship with us, in accordance with data protection law.
Why are we doing this and how can you participate?
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 is proud to celebrate the selfless, brave, and exceptional achievements of young people aged 13 – 19 with the Teen Heroes. With your help we can reward the amazing-ness of the UK’s undiscovered Teen Heroes.
Your nominee must be between 13-19 years old. If your nominee is under 18, you will need permission from the nominee's parent/guardian. We ask you and your nominee to read Teen Heroes Rules and privacy notice before submitting your nomination.
What will Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ collect and how will we use it?
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will collect and process the personal data set out in this privacy notice for the purposes of administering and promoting the Teen Heroes.
If you decide to nominate someone for the Teen Heroes, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will collect and process the below personal data that you have provided to us about yourself:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your relationship to your nominee
- Whether you are over or under the age of 18
If you are under the age of 18, you will need your parent or guardian’s permission before you submit your nomination. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will collect and process the below personal data about your parent or guardian:
- Name
- Email address
- Phone number
We will also collect and process the below personal data of your nominee (and if they are under the age of 18, the personal data of their parent or guardian) that you have provided to us. You must not submit a nomination without getting permission from the nominee or their parent/guardian.
- Name
- Email address
- Phone number
- Whether your nominee is over or under the age of 18
So that we can share with our audience the achievements of those nominated, the name and age of nominees may be shared on air on Radio 1 or on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ social media platforms.
Who is the Data Controller?
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is the “data controller” of your personal data. This means that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ decides what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.
Lawful basis for processing your personal data
The legal basis on which the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ processes your personal data is the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s legitimate interest. We have carefully considered the impact on you and will not use your personal data where the impact overrides our interests.
Sharing your data
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ works with our approved third-party providers who help us to provide some of our services. These data processors only use your personal data on behalf of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and not independently of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. We currently use third-party providers to store the data collected through the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ online platform.
We may also share your personal data with a third party where required or permitted by law.
Retaining your data
We will keep your personal data and the personal data of the person you nominate until 8 December 2021. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ shall keep the winners’ personal data for 2 years for audit and regulatory purposes. The names of the winners will be made public.
The personal data collected will be stored within the UK and EEA.

You have rights under data protection law. You can request a copy of the personal data Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ stores about you.
You have the right to ask for the personal data we collect about you to be deleted however there are limitations and exceptions to this right which may entitle the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ to refuse your request.
In certain circumstances, you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data or to object to the processing of your personal data.
You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data to you or to another organisation, in certain circumstances.
