What I learnt from being a trainee on Funny Festival Live

Krishna Modhwadia, Production Trainee

How did you find out about the opportunity?

"Don’t put red wine in the ice bucket!"
Krishna Modhwadia

I was a trainee on Man Like Mobeen Series 3, and the lovely people over at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Comedy kept my details and got in touch to see if I’d be interested in being a part of this project.

What makes you want to work in television?

Throughout the years, watching TV (and Comedy in particular) has always been my go-to happy place, and regardless of how tough things got in my personal life I was always able to find solace in rewatching my favourite sitcoms and comedy specials, and at one point it became all I was doing all day everyday… which led to me realising it only made sense to take it one step further and actually be involved in making it.

What was your role on the Funny Festival Live set?

I was the Production Trainee, so my role was to support the rest of the Production team to ensure everything was running smoothly behind the scenes. This involved looking after guests & talent - making sure they were all on time with arriving & getting covid tested, manning the green room pre & post shows, checking to make sure everyone was well fed and generally had everything they might need to make their experience a more relaxed, enjoyable one.

One thing you learnt from the experience?

Don’t put red wine in the ice bucket. But seriously, I’m used to working in scripted and have only ever watched stand-up comedy live in person or on TV - and as an aspiring Comedy Producer, getting to witness all the behind-the-scenes magic of it all, as well as actually be directly involved was very valuable, and really I was just soaking it all in. I learnt so much!

What one piece of advice would you give to future trainees?

Make the most out of every minute you’re there. Keep in mind it’s a busy working environment and people have jobs to do - but in my experience more often than not people will find the time to explain what they do and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Other than that - network with everyone and try to make yourself useful wherever possible. If you’re loving the experience and see yourself doing more, make that known to the company and ask them to consider you for any entry-level roles they may have coming up.
