Partition of India — remarkable stories of escape from ‘horrific violence’

When British colonial rule of India ended in August 1947, the country was divided into two independent states. India was intended to be majority-Hindu and a new state – Pakistan – was created for Muslims.

The division, known as partition, saw millions of Muslims moving to live in Pakistan and millions of Hindus, as well as Sikhs, travelling to settle in India.

But in the rush to shift across new borders .

Some of those caught up in the violence of partition eventually settled in Scotland. Despite starting new, more peaceful lives, they did not forget the scenes they left behind.
