Radio 3 Young Artists Day

On May 4th Bank Holiday Monday, Radio 3 took a spring moment to salute the exciting upcoming talent working in the arts today, offering a snapshot of young choreographers, composers, musicians, poets, photographers and writers – all of them under 25 – talking about their work and their hopes for the future. From in the morning through to at night, there were interviews, music, commissions and features.

commissioned five young female spoken word poets to write new work tackling themes that matter to them and there will be more material on where young film-makers from the Roundhouse filmed events of the day.

The artists taking part in the day come from a range of disciplines, from poets and writers, to composers, musicians and visual artists.

Magnus, 14, poet

Magnus started writing poetry aged 12, having been set a homework task. The poem he wrote, 'I am', was one of the winning poems in Foyle Young Poets 2013.

Isla Anderson, 17, poet

Isla Anderson is a 17 year old published poet. She has won several poetry competitions including Foyle Young Poets, the Basil Bunting Poetry Competition, and the Ledbury Poetry Festival.

Ruth Elliot, 19, composer

Although in the midst of an English Literature degree at the University of Oxford, Ruth is a promising young composer.

Folu Odimayo, 18, choreographer

Folu is a member of the Sadlers Wells National Youth Dance Company whose choreography has led to him being described as ‘one to watch’

Richard Malone, 23 designer

Richard Malone graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2014, where he was awarded the prestigious LVMH Grand Prix scholarship. His 12 look graduate collection opened the year’s BA Fashion press show and was awarded the Deutsche Bank Award for Fashion.

Martin James Bartlett, 18, pianist

Martin James Bartlett was awarded the title of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Young Musician in 2014 at the age of 17. His winning performance was of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, with conductor Kirill Karabits and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Ruth Spencer Jolly, 21, video artist

Ruth is a second year student of Fine Art. Music has been a big part of her upbringing and plays an important role in her audio-visual artwork.

Lloyd Coleman, 22, composer

Lloyd studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music until July 2014. He is now developing a freelance career in writing and performing as a clarinetist.

Michael Sluman, 24, oboist

Michael is an oboist who mixes his work as a performer with creative collaborations around improvisation and composition. Originally self-taught, he didn’t take up the instrument until the age of 16.

Kinetica Bloco, performance group

Kinetika Bloco is a mix of young musicians aiming to create a new British Carnival sound. Their influences come from the Caribbean, Brazil, West and Southern Africa, New Orleans jazz, Funk and Hip Hop.

The Roundhouse Choir

The Roundhouse Choir performs original and diverse music from gospel to folk, pop to African traditional. They have performed with artists including Mark Ronson, Spiritualized, Boy George, Imogen Heap and Tim Exile.

Jess Carmody, singer-songwriter

Carmody is a singer- songwriter based in South-East London, who combines folk, pop and jazz with evocative lyrics and dreamy melodies.

Jay Capperauld, saxophohist and composer

Scotland-based saxophonist and composer Jay Capperauld studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, has written for various instrumentalists and ensembles, and won a number of awards for his work.

Edward Dowsett, 22, photographer

Edward Dowsett uses photography, performance and installation to explore the boundaries of human endeavour and experience within the contemporary environment. He has exhibited in London, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Samantha Shannon, 23, Novelist

Author of 'The Bone Season' and 'The Mime Order', Samantha began writing and sending her work to publishers when she was just 15. She was 20 when she sold the rights to her seven book series.

Amy Blakemore, 23, writer

Twice named Foyle Young Poet of the Year. Her first collection 'Humbert Summer' will be published in July.

Kizzy Crawford, 23, singer-songwriter

A welsh singer-songwriter with Bajan heritage. She writes and performs in both English and Welsh. Kizzy was announced as one of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Wales and Arts Council of Wales ‘Horizons 12’ artists in 2014.

Isaiah Hull, 17, performance poet

A member of 'Young Identity', a group of young spoken word performers based in Manchester.

Chibundu Onuzo, 24, writer

Chibundu Onuzo was born in Nigeria in 1991. Her novel, The Spider King's Daughter was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Commonwealth Book Prize.
