5 Live listeners pick Sir Steve Redgrave's fifth Olympic gold as sporting achievement of decade

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 5 Live listeners have chosen Sir Steve Redgrave's fifth Olympic gold as the greatest sporting achievement of the decade 2000 to 2009.

Listeners picked Sir Steve from a final shortlist of four contenders as overall winner on New Year's Day in 5 Live Breakfast.

The final four contenders, from an initial shortlist of 20 achievements nominated by the station's 5 Live Sport programme for the title, were:

  • Lance Armstrong – seven Tour de France wins
  • Roger Federer – 15 times Grand Slam Winner
  • England's World Cup winning rugby team – 2003
  • Steve Redgrave winning his fifth gold medal – 2000

From 28 December, on 5 Live Breakfast, listeners picked the individual or team that they felt made the most impressive sporting contribution of the Noughties. Listeners voted by text in 5 Live Breakfast.

The initial list of 20 contenders was:

  • Arsenal go unbeaten for an entire Premier League season
  • Best Mate becomes the first horse since Arkle to win three Cheltenham Gold Cups
  • Chris Hoy wins three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics
  • England win the Ashes in 2005
  • England win the Rugby World Cup
  • Joe Calzaghe remains unbeaten through the decade and retires as world champion
  • Kelly Holmes wins the 800 and 1500 metres gold medals at the 2004 Olympics
  • Lance Armstrong wins seven consecutive Tour de France titles, including the first six of the decade
  • Lennox Lewis knocks out Mike Tyson to retain his world heavyweight title
  • Lewis Hamilton becomes the youngest ever Formula One Champion
  • London wins the 2012 Olympics
  • Liverpool win the 2005 Champions League Final from 3-0 down against AC Milan
  • Manchester United win three consecutive Premier League titles, on two separate occasions
  • Michael Phelps wins a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics
  • Rebecca Adlington wins 400 and 800 metres gold medals at the Beijing Olympics
  • Roger Federer completes the career Grand Slam by the winning the French Open and then beats Pete Sampras's Grand Slam record at Wimbledon
  • Steve Redgrave wins his fifth Olympic gold medal at the Sydney Olympics
  • Tiger Woods wins his 12th major of the decade with a broken leg at the 2008 US Open
  • Usain Bolt wins the 100 and 200 metres at the Beijing Olympics in world-record times
  • Wales win the rugby union Grand Slam in 2005 for the first time in 27 years

Notes to Editors

From 6.00am on Monday 28 December 2009, a text vote was launched allowing listeners of the 5 Live Breakfast programme the opportunity to vote for the greatest sporting achievement of the last decade.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sport shortlisted 20 of the greatest sporting achievements of the last decade. This shortlist was randomly divided into four groups of five achievements.

On each day from Monday 28 to Thursday 31 December, a list of five achievements was read out on the 5 Live Breakfast show and listeners were asked to text their vote for one achievement each day. The achievement with the most votes at the end of each day was announced at approximately 9.00am that day and went through to the final vote.

Listeners texted their votes for the winner on Friday 1 January 2010.

The winning achievement was announced during 5 Live Breakfast on Friday 1 January 2010.
