Radio 3 stage line-up announced for WOMAD Festival 2009

Andrew McGregor

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 broadcasts live from the WOMAD festival for the ninth year giving the opportunity to hear performances from some of the leading lights of world music throughout the weekend, Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July.

The Radio 3 Stage continues the tradition of hosting an enticing mix of new and emerging artists, and the on-site Radio 3 studio will be broadcasting main stage highlights, exclusive interviews as well as the celebrated truck sessions.

Each day of the festival Radio 3 will broadcast live performances starting at 11.00pm on Friday with a special live edition of Radio 3's World On 3 featuring Bhangra legend Channi Singh, who pioneered the Bhangra sound in the Eighties with his band Alaap.

Saturday night's festivities include the award-winning young radical of the English folk music scene, Jim Moray, and – guaranteed to finish the weekend on a high – one of Scotland's finest folk bands Deaf Shepherd perform at 11.00pm on Sunday.

Great performances are also guaranteed during the daytime.

Radio 3's World Routes comes live from WOMAD on Saturday at 3.00pm when Lucy Duran presents the Azerbaijani mugham singer Gochag Askerov, who was first recorded by the programme in 2007.

Lucy is then back on the airwaves on Sunday at 1.00pm to present Mamer, a cult figure of Beijing's underground music scene, for RadioΒ 3's WOMAD 2009 Live programme. Mamer's combination of western folk, rock and alt country with traditional Kazakh folk song and dombra music has brought him many fans.

World music radio guru Charlie Gillett will feature three special recording sessions to be aired on World On 3, Radio 3's dedicated Friday night world music programme. Confirmed so far are Berlin folk-rockers 17 Hippies and members of indigenous Australian collective the Black Arm Band.

Set in Charlton Park's picturesque Arboretum, the Radio 3 Stage presents a diverse selection of artists celebrating music from around the globe.

Other confirmed artists include: Belgian/Slovakian Mec Yek; Madagascan musician Nogabe Randriaharimalala; UK legend Dennis Bovell and his expansive, big-bottomed dub; Hindi Zahra (France/Morocco); Ba Cissoko (Guinea); Victor DemΓ© (Burkino Faso) and the Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan (India).

Radio 3's weekend of broadcasts also has live relays and recorded highlights of the main stage artists, where the line-up includes two greats from Africa – Oumou Sangare and Rokia Traore – as well as Buena Vista's Eliades Ochoa from Cuba, and London's own Portico Quartet.

The weekend's broadcasts will be hosted by Radio 3's World Music presenters Andrew McGregor, Lopa Kothari, Charlie Gillett and Lucy Duran.

Fiona Talkington presents more highlights in Late Junction over the following week, and World On 3 and World Routes also include recordings from WOMAD.

There will be full coverage on the Radio 3 website, with complete recordings of many of the sets, and further information on Radio 3's world music output – bbc.co.uk/radio3.

All Radio 3 WOMAD coverage is available to listen again for seven days after broadcast on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ iPlayer.
