Radio 4 announces schedule changes

From January 2009, the week day 3.00-3.45pm strand on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 will change.

Μύ

The Afternoon Readings, currently transmitted each week day at 3.30pm, will change from five to three broadcasts between Tuesday and Thursday.

Μύ

This makes way for another chance for listeners to hear the network's Archive Hour on Monday afternoons and a new slot for Gardeners' Question Time on Friday.

Μύ

The Archive Hour is broadcast on Saturdays at 8.00pm. From Monday 5 January 2009, a new edited version – to be called Archive On 4 – will transmit each week at 3.00pm.

Μύ

Gardeners' Question Time at present broadcasts on Wednesday afternoons. From Monday 9 January it will move to Friday afternoons and will be an extended 45-minute programme going out between 3.00 and 3.45 pm.

Μύ

Mark Damazer, Controller, Radio 4 says: "The Archive Hour is one of the network's gems. I have always felt it would be a great addition to the daytime weekday schedule.

Μύ

"Introducing a shorter repeat of Saturday's Archive Hour on a Monday afternoon will enable new listeners to enjoy these fascinating stories from recent history."

Μύ

Gardeners' Question Time, first broadcast in 1947, is a huge favourite with keen gardeners, who tune in to the show in their hundreds of thousands every week.

Μύ

Producer Trevor Taylor says: "The extra time is a real endorsement of the programme's success and popularity with the Radio 4 audience.

Μύ

"The programme being broadcast on Fridays with a Sunday repeat enables us to gear Gardeners' Question Time to the weekend, when we know the majority of our listeners are busy tending to their gardens.

Μύ

"The changes will mean a real horticultural bonus for Radio 4's keen gardening audience."

Μύ

Gardeners' Question Time will still be repeated in full on Sundays at 2.00pm – a slot the programme has occupied since 1957.

Μύ

Notes to Editors

Μύ

The Archive Hour is currently only broadcast on Saturdays between 8.00 and 9.00pm and at present does not have a regular repeat slot.

Μύ

Currently Gardeners' Question Time is first broadcast on Sundays (2.00-2.45pm) with an edited half-hour repeat broadcast on Wednesdays (3.00-3.30pm).

Μύ

Eric Robson and Peter Gibbs are the current chairmen of the show. Regular panellists answering audience questions include: Bob Flowerdew, Anne Swithinbank, Chris Beardshaw, John Cushnie, Bunny Guinness, Matthew Biggs and Pippa Greenwood.

Μύ

Gardeners' Question Time was first broadcast in 1947.

Μύ

Originally named How Does Your Garden Grow? it was inspired by the wartime Dig For Victory campaign.
