Inside Out East Midlands dives into swimming debate

In the new series of Inside Out on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One East Midlands at 7.30pm on Wednesday 17 September, Natalie Jackson talks to Rebecca Adlington's friends and family to reveal how the teenager from Mansfield become a world-beater.

The programme also considers what Rebecca's success is likely to mean for British swimming as we approach our own Olympic Games in 2012.

Adlington is one of two Olympic swimmers appearing in the opening programme in the new series. Sharron Davies visits Derby to highlight the plight of public pools.

Davies notes that, while swimming remains Britain's most popular sporting pastime, with over a fifth of all adults and half of all schoolchildren regularly taking the plunge, the number of facilities is on the decline.

She says: "It's been estimated we're losing 10% of our school pools each year and many of our public baths – and, personally, I find that a pretty scary statistic."

Davies talks to local residents who took Derby City Council to court to save their public pool from closure.

The programme also looks at the increasing popularity of body art, with a report from the Derby Tattoo Festival, which has become one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. Μύ
