Press Releases

New Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two comedy: In My Country starring Omid Djalili, Miranda Hart's Joke Shop and Rab C Nesbitt returns

Lucy Lumsden, Controller of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Comedy Commissioning, today announced new comedy commissions for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two, Simon Nye's In My Country (working title), Miranda Hart's Joke Shop and a special return for Rab C Nesbitt.

Μύ

In My Country (working title) is written by Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly), with additional material written by Omid Djalili, and described as Men Behaving Badly meets Rising Damp, or even Only Fools And Horses mixed with Goodness Gracious Me.

Μύ

Set in a run down guest house in north London, Omid Djalili (The Omid Djalili show, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One) plays Navid, an Iranian immigrant down on his luck and a permanent resident at the guest house.

Μύ

Stephen K Amos (stand-up comedian and star of Live At The Apollo, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One; The Royal Variety Show and EastEnders) plays Johnny, a Nigerian immigrant newly arrived in Britain.

Μύ

Other guest house residents include: Ratana (Vee Vimolmal), an ex-Thai bride, and her eight-year-old son; Sali (Velibor Topic), an immigrant from Kosovo; plus, half-a-dozen Polish builders who work 18-hours a day and then fall asleep in a pile.

Μύ

Mrs Ledley (Amelia Bullmore), the landlady, lives next door and appears every now and then to collect the rent, and to remind them of the rules of the house: "If you see a rat, kill it."

Μύ

In My Country is six 30-minute episodes and will go into production in 2009 to be shown later that year.

Μύ

It is produced by Jane Berthoud, directed by Tony Dow and executive produced by Mark Freeland.

Μύ

The series was commissioned by Roly Keating, Controller of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two, and Lucy Lumsden, Controller of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Comedy Commissioning.

Μύ

Comedy actress Miranda Hart (Hyperdrive, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two; Not Going Out, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One; Lead Balloon, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two/Four) writes and stars in her first solo television series, Miranda Hart's Joke Shop.

Μύ

Meet Miranda. She's desperate to fit in, but can't. She has never managed to flirt successfully; has never fitted in with "the girls" (not least because she's a foot taller than them) and, due to years of agoraphobic tendencies, she doesn't know how to behave socially or how to avoid embarrassment, especially around men.

Μύ

Also she is a constant disappointment to her mother Penny.

Μύ

Miranda Hart's Joke Shop (working title) is a farcical, affectionate and thoroughly modern comedy about being the odd one out.

Μύ

Miranda Hart's Joke Shop is six 30-minute episodes written and starring Miranda Hart, and will go into production in 2009 to be shown later that year.

Μύ

The series is directed by Gareth Carrivick, produced by Nerys Evans, executive produced by Pete Thornton and commissioned by Roly Keating and Lucy Lumsden.

Μύ

The much-loved Govan philosopher Rab C Nesbitt returns for the first time in a decade for a new one-off 45-minute special.

Μύ

With his inimitable patter Gregor Fisher will once again don his string vest.

Μύ

What's been happening to him in the last ten years? Is he still a hell-raiser or a reformed character?

Μύ

Elaine C Smith as Mary "Mary Doll" Nesbitt, Rabs's long-suffering wife, joins him.

Μύ

The original award-winning series created by Ian Pattison first appeared in the late Eighties and ran for eight series.

Μύ

The special is again written by Ian and will be shown later this year, directed and produced by Colin Gilbert from the Comedy Unit (part of the RDF Media Group), and commissioned by Roly Keating and Lucy Lumsden.

Μύ

Lucy Lumsden said: "The return of a great character such as Rab C Nesbitt, along with two new audience sit-coms, reflects the wide range of diverse, distinctive, quality comedy Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two continues to offer viewers."
