Dame Evelyn Glennie and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers
in tune for Glasgow's Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms in the Park 2008

Acclaimed Scots percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and cult bagpipe group the Red Hot Chilli Pipers are among the acts at this year's Scottish celebrations of Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms In The Park.

The free event at Glasgow Green on Saturday 13 September 2008 will be presented by Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio Scotland's Jamie MacDougall (Caledon) and sponsored by NS&I.

Also on the bill is the National Youth Choir of Scotland (with artistic director Christopher Bell), while celebrated conductor Robert Zeigler will command the evening's entertainment alongside the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Ìý
Grammy-award winning virtuoso Dame Evelyn Glennie – who has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12 – is a renowned classical percussionist who creates rich and innovative sounds, making her a world-class performer.

The Aberdeenshire-born musician, who was awarded an OBE in 1993, performs more than 100 concerts a year and has collaborated with international artists including Sting and Bjork.

A Proms veteran, this will be Dame Evelyn's first Scottish Proms in the Park show.

She says: "I have had the good fortune to be part of several Proms in the Park experiences over the years and it goes without saying that I am hugely excited to be participating in my first Scottish Prom. I can feel the crowd already!

Ìý
Glasgow-based bagpipe band the Red Hot Chilli Pipers were propelled to musical notoriety in 2004 after they appeared on the main stage at T In The Park.

Hailed as the "world's first rock and roll pipers", the eight-piece band put a modern spin on piping and drumming, with an emphasis on showmanship.

Founded by Stuart Cassells, former Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, the cult outfit have played alongside rockers The Darkness and count Ewan McGregor, Phil Collins and HRH The Princess Royal among their growing legion of fans.

Stuart is certain the band will bring a unique angle to the Proms In The Park experience.

Each year, Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms In The Park brings the magic of the Last Night Of The Proms to more than a million people across the United Kingdom in four locations – Glasgow, Belfast, Swansea and London.

Each location hosts a different programme of music, culminating in a live link-up with London's Royal Albert Hall and the other park events around the country.

All four Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms In The Park events are sponsored by NS&I (National Savings and Investments), the Government-backed savings and investments provider.

The Â鶹ԼÅÄ's Glasgow Proms in the Park is mounted in partnership with Culture and Sport Glasgow and Glasgow City Council.

Funders of the event include Glasgow City Council and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

Logistical support in mounting Glasgow's Proms in the Park is provided by events management staff from Culture and Sport Glasgow.

Dame Evelyn Glennie
Ìý
Dame Evelyn Glennie is the first person in musical history to successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist.
Ìý
As one of the most eclectic and innovative musicians on the scene today, she constantly re-defines the goals and expectations of percussion.
Ìý
By combining superb technique, a profound appreciation of the visual and her astonishing musicality, Evelyn creates performances of such vitality that they almost constitute a new type of musical art.
Ìý
Evelyn gives more than 100 performances a year worldwide, appearing with the greatest conductors, orchestras and artists.
Ìý
Her diversity of collaborations has included work with artists including Nana Vasconcelos, Kodo, Bela Fleck, Bjork, Bobby McFerrin, Emmanuel Ax, Sting, King Singers, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Fred Firth.

Evelyn has released 25 solo CDs to date and has commissioned 150 works for percussion.

In 1993 Evelyn was awarded the OBE (Officer of the British Empire). This was extended in 2007 to Dame Commander for her services to music, and to date she has received over 80 international awards. Ìý
Red Hot Chilli Pipers

Cult bagpipe outfit the Red Hot Chilli Pipers made their big stage debut in 2004 at T In The Park, performing alongside headliners The Darkness.

Three years later, the band were crowned champions of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's talent show When Will I Be Famous, astounding viewers across the land with their rock bagpipes performances.
Ìý
Such is their popularity, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers perform all round the world at concerts, festivals and events as far afield as the USA and China.

They are also asked to perform regularly at celebrity events such as Scots Hollywood star Ewan McGregor's Burns Supper in London.

Their most recent CD, Bagrock To The Masses, achieved Platinum sales in Scotland in just six weeks and became the highest-selling CD from a Scottish record label in 2007.

The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are: Stuart Cassells (pipes), former Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2005; Steven Graham (snare drum), twice world champion snare drummer; Willie Armstrong and Kevin MacDonald (pipers), both of whom have performed in World Pipe Band Championships winning bands; Gregor James (guitar); Malcolm McEwan (percussion); Steven Black (drums); and Chris Russell (keyboards).

Established in 1996 to provide a forum for young people to sing to the highest possible standards, the National Youth Choir of Scotland has dramatically expanded its activities over the years to include NYCoS for singers aged 16-24, NYCoS Training Choir for less experienced singers aged 14-18, a National Boys Choir, a new National Girls Choir, a network of nine Area Choirs, books, music publications, CDs, in-service days and Singing Days.

Robert Ziegler is one of the most versatile and innovative musicians in the UK today, performing with many of the major British orchestras.

As well as conducting the standard repertoire, he works in opera, musical theatre, pop and contemporary music.

A prizewinner in the prestigious Fitelberg Conductors Competition, Robert trained as a pianist with Jakob Gimpel and John Ringgold.

Robert made his Proms In The Park debut in 2006.

The Â鶹ԼÅÄ Scottish Symphony Orchestra is recognised as one of Britain's finest and most versatile orchestras.

It plays in venues all over Scotland and in Britain's most prestigious events, including the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms and Edinburgh International Festival.
Ìý
The orchestra represents Scotland in the great cultural centres of Europe, China, the USA and South America, and all its performances are broadcast on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio and TV.
