Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two serves up the Great British Menu


After weeks of competitive cooking in the kitchen the winning chefs and the final mouthwatering four-course menu of the hit Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two cookery series Great British Menu have been revealed.

The winning dishes and their chef creators are –

Starter: BLT in a glass, Jason Atherton (London and the South East);

Μύ

Fish course: Salmon three ways, Stephen Terry (Wales);

Μύ

Main course: Dexter beef with ox cheek & marrow bone, Jason Atherton (London and the South East);

Μύ

Dessert: Burnt English cream, marinated strawberries and honeycomb, Glynn Purnell (Central England).

The winning chefs will go on to recreate their dishes at a special banquet hosted by world-renowned chef Heston Blumenthal.

The dinner celebrating the very best of modern British cuisine will be held at the restaurant at the top of London's Gherkin and the guest list includes some of the finest gastronomic talent from around the globe.

A special documentary featuring the banquet will be broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two on Friday 13 June 2008.

In the ultimate cookery competition, 14 of the nation's top chefs have been battling it out for the chance to prove that modern British cooking is amongst the best in the world.

This year the chefs were challenged to create dishes which reflect cutting edge, contemporary 21st century cuisine.

In a change to the rules for this year's competition the judges stated that the main ingredient of each dish had to be British but, to allow even greater creativity, the chefs were allowed to use other ingredients from all around the world.

At the end of each of the seven week-long regional heats, Great British Menu judges Prue Leith, Matthew Fort and Oliver Peyton were faced with the task of deciding which chef from each region would go through the national finals and the public vote.

In the final week of programmes, the seven winners of the regional heats returned to the Great British Menu kitchen to serve up their entire menus for the judges once more.

The judges then tasted and scored each dish before putting all the dishes up for the public vote.

The final dishes were selected by combining the judges' scores and the viewers' votes.

Matthew Fort kicked off the series by travelling the country and selecting the chefs that would represent each region.

He says: "It is a very British menu in the sense that you start with a sandwich, you go on to breakfast – fish fingers, then Sunday lunch and you end up with a proper pudding.

"The quality which binds them together is the sense of humour the British bring to food, which you don't find anywhere else."

Jason Atherton, who will be cooking the starter and the main course at the banquet, says: "I'm totally ecstatic, it's absolutely fantastic, to get not only one dish but two dishes and get the public vote behind me, that is just incredible."

Heston Blumenthal says: "It is important to show the rest of the world how good British cooking is.

"I am proud to be British and we have so much to offer here that if we have the opportunity to showcase that to the rest of the world that can only be a great thing."
