Purves & Pekkala – new Scottish drama for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One

Filming has begun in Edinburgh on Purves & Pekkala, a new 75-minute murder mystery written and directed by acclaimed writer Annie Griffin (The Book Group, Festival) – her first drama for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One.

Μύ

There are some neighbourhoods people would kill to live in – Purves & Pekkala takes today's obsession with urban redesign to another level.

Μύ

The new drama stars Mark Gatiss (The League Of Gentlemen, Nighty Night) and Finnish actor Max Bremer as architects Duff Purves and Mikko Pekkala, alongside Daniela Nardini (This Life, Festival) as ruthless estate agent Meredith McIlvanney.

Μύ

Omid Djalili (Lead Balloon, Pirates Of The Caribbean) plays property developer Walter and Paul Higgins (The Last Enemy, The Thick Of It) plays lawyer Hamish Glennie.

Μύ

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One drama centres on the lives of two ambitious architects who, fed up doing kitchen renovations, set their sights on grand property plans after a local developer asks them to renovate the most prestigious Georgian building in the city.

Μύ

But their plans are thwarted by interfering organisations and that simply won't do.

Μύ

When their nemesis falls from a landmark building – the question is, did he fall or was he pushed? In Purves & Pekkala the desire to become the hottest architects in town takes a mysterious twist.

Μύ

Anne Mensah, Head of Drama for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland and executive producer on Purves & Pekkala, says: "As with all of Annie's work, Purves & Pekkala is very authored and distinctive drama.

Μύ

"Through it, Annie introduces us to some of the most original and entertaining characters you could ever hope to meet on TV and it is all going to look absolutely beautiful.

Μύ

"It is inspiring to be working with Annie on her first drama for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One."

Μύ

Annie Griffin adds: "I'm looking forward to making Purves & Pekkala in Edinburgh. It'll be my first mystery, and I'm not going to reveal anything about it."

Μύ

Purves & Pekkala will film on location in Edinburgh over a four-week period during April 2008. The 75-minute drama is scheduled to transmit on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One in 2008/9.

Μύ

Annie Griffin directs Purves & Pekkala and is also the executive producer, alongside Anne Mensah, with Jemma Rodgers (God On Trial, Murphy's Law) as producer.

Μύ

Purves & Pekkala also stars Gabriel Quigley (Still Game, Chewin The Fat), John Bett (The Golden Compass, The Legend Of Loch Lomond), Natasha Watson (River City, Iota) and TV newcomer Rose Leslie, amongst others.

Μύ

The drama continues in the footsteps of distinctive productions recently made through Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland including surreal crime drama Reichenbach Falls (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Four) and kung-fu action tale Phoo Action (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Three) as well as forthcoming productions PAs (2AM TV, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Three), Fiona's Story (Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One), God On Trial (Hat Trick Production, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two), Wallander (Left Bank Pictures, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One) and Hope Springs (Shed Productions, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One).

Μύ

It is the latest in a recent wave of exciting Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One drama commissions for 2008/2009, including Bonekickers (Kudos) and The Invisibles (Company Pictures).

Μύ

Purves & Pekkala is a Pirate Productions drama through Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One and is commissioned by Jane Tranter, Controller, Fiction, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.

Μύ

Annie Griffin's multi-award-winning film and television production company, Pirate Productions, was set up in 1995 and since 1997 has been based in Scotland.
