Three new podcasts available from Radio 3
|
Two of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3's oldest and best-loved programmes will be available to download from 9 February – Building A Library, starting with Mozart's last String Quartet, and Composer Of The Week, exploring the life and work of Herbert Howells.

At the same time Radio 3 launches a World Routes podcast with a special from Azerbaijan. These three programmes join the Arts & Ideas, Music Matters and Jazz Library podcasts which are already available.

Roger Wright, Controller of Radio 3, said: "These new podcasts, alongside the others, will offer existing listeners a new way to enjoy much-loved programmes. We hope they will also help bring classical jazz and world music to new audiences, making music and conversation about it more accessible."

Building A Library is one of the key sections of Radio 3's CD Review every Saturday at 9.00am. Each week, an expert compares available recordings of a well-known piece of classical music and recommends the must-have recordings. The first podcast features Peter Quantrill on Mozart's last String Quartet, K590.

Composer Of The Week is presented by Donald Macleod and is on Radio 3 weekdays at noon. The podcasts will enable listeners to hear the week's programmes in an omnibus edition. In the first podcast, Donald Macleod journeys through the life and music of Herbert Howells (1892-1983), an eminent English composer most famous for his church music whose career was haunted by personal tragedy.

World Routes is presented by Lucy Duran and is on Radio 3 on Saturdays at 3.00pm. In the first podcast, Lucy Duran travels the entire length of Azerbaijan to record some of the country's best musicians. She meets some of the biggest Mugham performers including Alim Gasimov, who records a unique session with his daughter, and the so-called "guardian" of the genre Aghakhan Abdullayev.

Composer Of The Week is on Radio 3 every Monday to Friday from midday to 1.00pm and repeated at 8.45pm. The programme has been on air since 1943 and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2003.

Building A Library is part of CD Review, every Saturday on Radio 3 from 9.00am to 12.15pm. CD Review celebrated its 50th anniversary last year on Radio 3. (Note: CD Review was formerly called Record Review).

The podcasts are edited versions of the broadcast programmes and will include short clips of music of up to a minute in length.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ was the first British broadcaster to podcast when it offered Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4's In Our Time as a podcast in November 2004. It was part of a trial launched to help understand podcasting technology, audiences' appetite for downloads and their preferred content.

A formal podcasting trial started in May 2005. A full service was launched following the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust's approval of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ on-demand services in April, after a Public Value Test.
