Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland and Woodland Trust support schools in Tree For All campaign

17,000 trees planned for Clackmannanshire

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland Controller, Ken MacQuarrie, today planted a tree at the corporation's Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow as a prelude to an exciting, new joint initiative with the Woodland Trust, Scotland.

He was assisted by pupils of St Oswald's School in Glasgow and Andrew Fairbairn, Scotland Development Manager of the Woodland Trust.

Ken MacQuarrie said: "The Tree For All initiative will span five years and hopes to involve children in the planting of 12 million trees throughout the UK.

"Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland is already engaged in substantial paper recycling and, in the spring of 2008, will go one step further and assist in the planting of 17,000 trees at Geordie's Wood near Muckhart in Clackmannanshire."

Primary Schools from Perth and Kinross and Clackmannanshire will join the Woodland Trust for a woodland adventure next spring.

They will join the trust and plant trees creating an area of new native woodland at Geordie's Wood.

The event has been designed to increase young people's understanding and appreciation of trees and woodland.

The campaign has previously received the support of television personality, gardener and Woodland Trust supporter Alan Titchmarsh.

1. This project will contribute to the Woodland Trust's Tree For All campaign. A UK-wide project, Tree For All was born out of a vision that all children should have the chance to plant trees. This project seeks to involve young people in planting two million trees in Scotland over the next five years.

2. For one tonne of paper recycled 17 trees are saved. By going a step further and planting trees, thus inspiring others to do the same, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will be contributing towards the future sustainability of our native forests.

3. Overall the project will see 17,500 trees planted by July 2008. New dry-stone dykes will be built with community volunteers, through support from this partnership project, to create new species habitats, enhance the landscape, and restore cultural connections with the past.

4. While many of the Woodland Trust Scotland's woodland sites are to protect existing native trees, Geordie's Wood is a site for new woodland creation, and is of substantial size in order to have maximum impact on biodiversity.

This initiative will be part of the Woodland Trust Scotland's aim to create a mosaic of enhanced wildlife habitat on a large scale in the Ochil Hills.

Three areas, Geordie's Wood, Glen Quey, and Glen Sherup, make up WTS' Glen Devon sites and cover an area of 1,235 hectares, all managed for their biodiversity value.

Core areas of land of this size provide better survival opportunities for organisms threatened by changes in climate and land use.
The area has had active community involvement since WTS took ownership of the sites in the earlier part of the decade.

The Muckhart Nature Park Association has been formed by local residents in Muckhart.
