1Xtra at the Africa Cup Of Nations 2008


The Africa Cup Of Nations – one of the biggest sporting events in the African continent – returns in January 2008.

Ìý

Some of the biggest names in England's Premier League, including Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue, will be departing the UK to play for their home countries.

Ìý

1Xtra Â鶹ԼÅÄ will be featuring all the action and highlights from the 26th tournament, with a series of special shows from London and host nation Ghana.

Ìý

Ras Kwame kicks off proceedings on 13 January with an exclusive 100% Â鶹ԼÅÄGrown five-a-side tournament, featuring four teams captained by 1Xtra's very own African nation representatives DJ Edu, Treble T, Twin B and Ace.

Ìý

The teams will be made up of some of the UK's finest UK artists and producers of African heritage, all battling to be crowned the official 1Xtra Â鶹ԼÅÄGrown African Nations champion. Award-winning UK rapper Sway will be 1Xtra pitch-side reporter for the tournament.

Ace, Treble T, and DJ Edu then travel to Ghana for the opening day of the competition on 20 January.

Ìý

Broadcasting live from Independence Square in Ghana's capital city Accra, Ace, Treble and Edu will be capturing the excitement from the first match of the tournament – Ghana v Guinea.

Ìý

The boys will also catch up with football fans and explore just how big football is in that region.

Ìý

Other highlights will include two special editions of DestiNation Africa with DJ Edu, live from the Royal City of Kumasi and the capital Accra.

Ìý

Edu will be exploring the music from some of the countries taking part in the championship as well as catching up with some of Ghana's music stars for their unique commentary on the fortnight of football.

Ìý

Ace, Treble T and DJ Edu will also return for the closing ceremony to see whether reigning champions Egypt retain the title they won in 2006, or if host nation Ghana gain the home advantage.

14-18 January (8-11am): 1Xtra Breakfast Show with Trevor Nelson and Zena

Ìý

Each morning this week, the Breakfast Boost will feature tracks selected by some of the stars of the Africa Cup Of Nations – Michael Essien (Ghana); Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast); Kanu (Nigeria); El Hadji Diouf (Senegal).They will be telling Trevor Nelson and Zena which two tracks help get them out of bed and raring for the day ahead.

20 January (4-7pm): Africa Cup Of Nations

Ìý

Live from Independence Square in Accra, Ace, Treble T and DJ Edu bring the best of the opening day of the competition and catch up with the fans looking forward to a massive fortnight of football.

23 January (midnight-2am): DestiNation Africa – Africa Cup Of Nations Special

Ìý

Live from Kumasi, Central Ghana, and home of Egypt, Cameroon, Sudan and Zambia, focussing on the music from those countries plus previewing the forthcoming big head-to-heads.

6 February (midnight-2am): DestiNation Africa – Africa Cup Of Nations Special

Ìý

Live from Ghana's Joy FM in Accra, Edu will play some of the most popular songs from Ghana and other nations in the competition. He will be talking to Ghanaian music stars for their reaction to having the Cup in their homeland.

10 February (4-7pm): Africa Cup Of Nations

Ìý

Ace, Treble T and DJ Edu with extensive coverage of the 2008 Africa Cup Of Nations from the capital Accra. Expect a look back at the tournament to date, and the road to the final for the two teams. 1Xtra will also be speaking to some of the expected one million fans who will have visited Ghana for the event over the last three weeks.
