Creative people wanted for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Manchester Mentor Project

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is looking for creative people in Greater Manchester with an interest in working in television, radio and new media to take part in a flexible training scheme.

Μύ

As part of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Manchester Mentor Project, trainees will have the chance to learn about different aspects of programme production and to test out their own ideas. Each trainee is matched with a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ mentor, who provides one-to-one support.

Μύ

Margaret McClelland, Development Executive, says: "It's a fantastic chance for young people to develop their skills and to learn about jobs within the North West broadcast industry. It's also an opportunity for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ to reflect the views and creative ideas of people from local communities who may have felt excluded in the past."

Μύ

One previous participant, Niamh Donohoe, says: "Taking part in the Mentor Project 2007 was one of the best and most inspiring things I have ever done. I found everyone involved in the project hugely supportive and always willing to give us their time and advice, and I'm now very happily employed as a runner in News and Current Affairs. The Mentor Project was a fantastic opportunity for me to realise a job direction and gain invaluable skills, and I feel lucky to have been part of it."

Μύ

The Mentor Project, which is now in its 10th year, aims to increase trainees' knowledge and understanding of working in television, radio and new media. Trainees also develop transferable skills through working in teams and communicating with colleagues, contributors and the public.

Μύ

Notes to Editors

Μύ

The Mentor Project does not create jobs for the trainees but aims to equip them with the skills to apply for jobs, training schemes or relevant higher education courses.

Μύ

The project runs from December 2007 through to July 2008 and involves:

Μύ

  • One-to-one mentoring with a member of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's staff in Manchester.

  • Eight half-day sessions at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ β€“ learning about different aspects of programme production.

  • Four weeks in July/August to produce a programme – this work will be full time and will be paid.

  • A period of work experience – which is optional during August-December 2008.

Μύ

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is looking for up to eight trainees. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 7 November.

Μύ

The minimum age for applicants is 16.

Μύ

Applicants can contact Angela Burton at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Manchester for further information: angela.burton@bbc.co.uk.
