Newsnight poll suggests most voters think Brown spins as much as Blair

A Newsnight/ICM Research poll to be broadcast this evening (Friday 12 October, 10.30pm) on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two, and available on The Big Fat Newsnight Politics Page, suggests that three-quarters of voters do not believe that Gordon Brown has lived up to his promise to bring about a new era of spin-free politics.

Μύ

The poll, which was conducted after this week's pre-budget report, also suggests that a clear majority believe that the Labour Party has pinched Conservative ideas on tax.

Μύ

Sixty-one per cent of those questioned believed that the level of spin now was the same as that under the previous Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and a further 15% felt that Gordon Brown's government was more likely to spin.

Μύ

Just 20% felt that the new government was less likely to spin.

Μύ

The figures show a significant change from a similar poll conducted by ICM Research in May 2006, in which 24% felt that Gordon Brown was more likely to spin, compared with 53% who felt that Tony Blair was more likely to spin.

Μύ

Asked whether Chancellor Alistair Darling had pinched Conservative ideas on taxation, more than half of those questioned agreed.

Μύ

The public were asked:

Μύ

Gordon Brown promised a new era of spin-free politics. Compared with the government under Tony Blair do you believe that Gordon Brown's government is:

Μύ

  • More likely to spin = 15%
  • No different = 61%
  • Less likely = 20%
  • Don't know = 4%

Μύ

Some people have suggested that the Labour Party pinched Conservative ideas on tax and included them in their spending review. Do you agree or disagree with this view?

Μύ

  • Agree = 57%
  • Disagree = 34%
  • Don't know = 9%

Μύ

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,010 adults aged 18 and over by telephone on 10-11 October 2007.

Μύ

Interviews were conducted across the country and the results have been weighted to the profile of all adults.
