Lloyd Webber set to make beautiful music
at Glasgow's Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms In The Park

Acclaimed cellist Julian Lloyd Webber is one of an array of artists who will take to the stage for this year's Scottish celebrations of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms In The Park in Glasgow Green on Saturday 8 September 2007.

From cello music to Celtic tunes, bass-baritone to choral harmonies, Scotland's Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms in the Park, in association with event sponsors NS&I, will showcase a myriad of musical styles with performances from Samoan bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu, Skye ceilidh band the Peatbog Faeries, Carnyx soloist John Kenny and the National Youth Choir of Scotland, conducted by Christopher Bell.

Sally Magnusson and Jamie MacDougall (Caledon) host the free event which, once again, sees acclaimed conductor Robert Zeigler commanding the evening's entertainment alongside the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Also making a debut at this year's Proms In The Park is Scotland's oldest musical instrument – the Carnyx. Shaped like a wild boar's head, complete with movable tongue and lower jaw, the bronze Celtic trumpet will be played by John Kenny and promises to make quite an impact.

Julian Lloyd Webber is excited about his forthcoming Scots show: "I am so looking forward to playing at this year's Proms In The Park which, in a very short time, has become one of the biggest events in the classical calendar. And, for the first time, music lovers in the Highlands will be able to experience the magic of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Proms In The Park with a unique – and free – big screen celebration of the key musical event in the glorious surroundings of Cawdor Castle, Nairn.

Making up part of the Highland 2007 celebrations, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms In The Park concert will be beamed live from Glasgow to the stately grounds of Cawdor Castle in front of an audience of 600 music lovers.

Julian Lloyd Webber

Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation, Julian Lloyd Webber has collaborated with an extraordinary array of musicians from Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel, Neville Marriner, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Georg Solti to Stephane Grappelli, Elton John and Cleo Laine. Julian has given more than 50 works their premiere recordings and his most recent recordings include Phantasia, based on brother Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom Of The Opera, featuring the violin talents of Sarah Chang.

Described by one music critic as "a Celtic Led Zeppelin", the Peatbog Faeries' folk fusion has led to growing critical acclaim and in 2005 the band won the Best Live Act award at the prestigious Scots Trad Music Awards.

Established in 1996 to provide a forum for young people to sing to the highest possible standards, the National Youth Choir Of Scotland has dramatically expanded its activities over the years to include NYCoS for singers aged 16 to 24, NYCoS Training Choir for less experienced singers aged 14 to 18, a National Boys Choir, a new National Girls Choir, a network of nine Area Choirs, books, music publications, CDs, in-service days and Singing Days.

John Kenny & the Carnyx

John Kenny's repertoire extends from ancient and ethnic music to the present day and he frequently appears as a concerto soloist with leading orchestras and ensembles. John is also a composer, actor, lecturer and music archaeologist. Birmingham-born John now lives in Edinburgh with his wife and two sons. The Carnyx was a long Celtic trumpet made of beaten bronze and held vertically so that the sound travels from more than three metres above the ground. It was known through much of Europe from about 200BC to 200AD and was widely depicted – notably on the Gundestrup bowl which shows three carnyces being played simultaneously.

Robert Ziegler

Robert Ziegler is one of the most versatile and innovative musicians in the UK today, performing with many of the major British orchestras. As well as conducting the standard repertoire, he works in opera, musical theatre, pop and contemporary music. A prizewinner in the prestigious Fitelberg Conductors Competition, Robert trained as a pianist with Jakob Gimpel and John Ringgold. Robert made his Proms In The Park debut in 2006.
