Radio Leicester's Down To Earth shoots up to 2,000

The making of the 2,000th edition of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Local Radio's longest-running programme – Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leicester's Down To Earth – is the culmination of events celebrating the landmark occasion..

Μύ

The special programme is recorded in Leicester's Guildhall on Tuesday 29 May.

Μύ

Many former presenters of the programme join other invited guests to take part in the horticultural extravaganza.

Μύ

The present team, including regular presenter Dave Andrews, offers green-fingered tips and advice on questions from the audience.

Μύ

Listeners will hear the ground-breaking programme when it airs on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leicester on Sunday 3 June 2007 between 1 and 2pm.

Μύ

The seeds for Down To Earth were sown during the station's opening week in November 1967. It began with a 15-minute slot which, in the intervening years, flourished to its present format of an hour–long programme every Sunday.

Μύ

Down To Earth blends entertainment with information on all things horticultural as listeners' questions are discussed by a panel of gardening experts.

Μύ

To produce the weekly show, the Down To Earth team branches out to locations in and around Leicestershire where it welcomes questions from listeners. Once a month a live phone–in is broadcast from the studio at Radio Leicester.

Μύ

Dave Andrews is thrilled to be involved with the long–running programme and demonstrates the camaraderie he shares with his colleagues when he says: "It's been a real privilege working with these characters over the last few years.

Μύ

"They are the kind of team who really sum up the best traditions of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ β€“ they inform, they educate, but more to the point they also entertain."

Μύ

He continues: 'We've had some great times visiting the region's pubs, prisons, community centres, village halls, castles and hotels. Wherever there is an audience and some questions – our team can make a programme.

Μύ

"They've been very patient with me too – as a total non–gardener my window box has been the butt of their humour over the years," he adds.

Μύ

"However, I got my own back when I got them to do a whole hour's outside broadcast from that very window box! Here's to the next 40 years."

Μύ

Radio Leicester's Down To Earth gardening experts are: Derek Cox, John Smith, Josie Hutchinson, Ray Coombes, Mike Salotti and Ady Dayman
