Sarah Walker and James Jolly to present new Radio 3 weekday morning programme

Sarah Walker and James Jolly are to present a new weekday morning programme on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3.

Μύ

Classical Collection (10.00am-noon) offers an in-depth guide to both contemporary and historic recordings of classical music, focussing mainly upon the core repertoire.

Μύ

Sarah is a pianist and musicologist who has been a Radio 3 presenter for many years and she introduces the launch edition of Classical Collection on 2 April 2007.

Μύ

This is James' first regular presenting role on the station but he is already a familiar voice to listeners having frequently contributed to CD Review.

Μύ

He is Editor-in-Chief of Gramophone magazine and brings his extensive knowledge of both the repertoire and recording industry to the programme.

Μύ

In each programme Sarah or James will focus on performance and interpretation of the repertoire. Regular features across the week will include discussion around three short works, comparing and analysing performers' interpretations or the performance of particular composers.

Μύ

The week will open with a complete performance of the critics' choice from the previous weekend's Building A Library in CD Review.

Μύ

Roger Wright, Controller of Radio 3 says: "We aim to encourage and guide our listeners through the wealth of recorded music.

Μύ

"Sarah and James are authoritative voices whose knowledge will continue to build Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3's reputation as the trusted guide to classical music."

Μύ

Sarah Walker says: "For me, working on Classical Collection is like being a kid in a sweet shop - the entire core classical repertoire is at my disposal, so in planning my first few weeks I've incorporated many distinctive performances of my favourite works.

Μύ

"I will be sharing my thoughts on each interpretation featured on the programme and really hope that listeners will enjoy the journey."

Μύ

James Jolly says: "Interpretation of music has been one of my passions since my teens so the opportunity to introduce my personal choices of great music in great performances is really tremendous.

Μύ

"I worked at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 in the late 1980s and greatly look forward to working once again for a station that has been a constant companion down the years."

Μύ

Classical Collection is produced for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 by Classic Arts Productions.

The presenters

Μύ

Sarah Walker was born in Barnsley and studied music at Royal Holloway College, followed by postgraduate studies in Performance and English Experimental Music at Reading University and City University.

Μύ

Her first work as a broadcaster dates back to 1992 when she presented Radio 3's Midnight Oil, followed soon afterwards by the flagship contemporary music programme Hear and Now.

Μύ

Over the next few years Sarah went on to present a wide variety of programmes for Radio 3 and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TV including Building A Library, Discovering Music, Performance On 3, Morning On 3, Afternoon Performance, Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts, The Proms and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Young Musician Of The Year.

Μύ

James Jolly was editor of Gramophone from 1989 to 2005. He stepped down from the role on the publication of the magazine's 1,000th issue, taking on the title of Editor-in-Chief. He contributes a monthly column on downloading and new technologies to the magazine and is also editor of the Classical Good CD, DVD and Download Guide.

Μύ

His written contributions outside Gramophone include articles for The Grove Dictionary Of Opera. James's first professional involvement with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio included a period as one of the producers of Saturday Review (the precursor of CD Review) at the end of the Eighties. Since then he has contributed not only to CD Review but also to Aled Jones's The Choir and, on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 2, to The Green Room with Mariella Frostrup.
