|
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 confirmed today that the station's flagship event, Radio 1's Big Weekend, will this year take place in Moor Park, Preston on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May.
Μύ
The sensational news was announced by Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley as her show was broadcast live from the National Football Museum, Preston.
Μύ
Hosted by Radio 1's roster of DJs, the Big Weekend is Europe's biggest free ticketed festival and kicks off the UK festival season.
Μύ
With a 30,000 strong capacity across the two days, the event is broadcast on Radio 1; has a major interactive presence online (bbc.co.uk/radio1); and will be available to watch on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Three and via the red button on interactive television.
Μύ
This year a third stage will be introduced bringing even more amazing UK and international artists across a huge array of musical genres – all live.
Μύ
Radio 1 will be making sure the majority of free tickets go to residents of Preston and the surrounding areas.
Μύ
To ensure a fair distribution of tickets in the region, Radio 1 will ask listeners to register their details and then select by random based on postcode.
Μύ
Over the coming months, keep listening to Radio 1 and logging on to bbc.co.uk/radio1 for full line-up, details on how to register for free tickets and information on ticket distribution.

Jason Carter, Live Music and Events Editor, said: "Radio 1 is delighted to announce Preston as host city for our seventh Big Weekend.
Μύ
"The event has grown from strength to strength over the past few years, with massive line-ups with some of the biggest artists in the UK and from around the world performing.
Μύ
"Radio 1 will be decamping for this weekend with all of our DJs to Moor Park. As well as bringing a stellar line-up it'll be an opportunity for Radio 1 to put a national focus on the North West and all that people are proud of there."
Μύ
Councillor Veronica Afrin, Preston's Executive Member for Regeneration, Community and Leisure Services, said: "We would like to thank Radio 1 for choosing Preston to host this year's Big Weekend.
Μύ
"Not only will this event create a buzz around the city and give local people something to be proud of, it will attract large numbers of visitors – particularly young people – from across the country and will give our economy a significant boost. Μύ
"This is an exciting opportunity for us and we're already working closely with partners to ensure the event is a huge success and that people leave Preston with a positive impression and a desire to return."
Μύ
Peter Mearns, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said: "The North West is a culturally dynamic region with a vibrant music scene so it is very fitting that Radio 1 will be bringing its Big Weekend to the area.
Μύ
"The region has a great track record of hosting world-class events, so I am confident that this will be the best Big Weekend yet.
Μύ
"The event gives us a great opportunity to put Preston, and the region, in the spotlight and with so many places to stay and things to do we hope that some of the festival-goers will take time out to explore more of North West England."
