Thames Gateway: Fabricated chaos?

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ launches a host of new online content lifting the lid on the Thames Gateway Development

Μύ

For the last decade the future of the South East region has been summed up by one phrase: The Thames Gateway Development. But how much do we all actually know about what is potentially the biggest ever change to Kent's social, ecological and economic environment?

Μύ

From today, bbc.co.uk/thamesgateway will be cutting through the regeneration jargon to bring you the big picture on the Thames Gateway Development in a simple, easy-to-access manner.

Μύ

The website will be looking at the impact on all areas; from transport and employment to community groups and spiritual welfare and asking the questions that you want answered: Will it mean more jobs for Kent people or are we creating opportunities for people outside our region? How will our doctors' surgeries cope? Who is looking out for the wildlife?

Μύ

Created by web, radio and TV journalists from across Kent, Essex and London, bbc.co.uk/thamesgateway brings information about the Thames Gateway to life with a combination of video, photos, maps and in-depth features.

Μύ

The site, online from today, will include:

Μύ

  • Useful facts, figures and maps about each town and area affected by the development including a breakdown of proposed housing developments and explanations of how organisations involved fit together;

  • Latest Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TV and radio features and links to other useful websites;

  • Message boards for users to raise the Thames Gateway issues that really matter to them;

  • 360 degree views of the whole area, with photo galleries and maps – and users' own photos and videos;

  • Opinionated views from experts concerned with the environment, architecture, transport and economic regeneration;

  • Games, quizzes, satirical films and specially-commissioned songs from comedian Mitch Benn.

Μύ

Vicki Berry, Assistant Editor for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ South East, said: "The Thames Gateway project is a huge opportunity for people living in the South East.

Μύ

"It is the biggest regeneration project in Western Europe – but many people living in the area don't understand what it will mean for them, if they have heard of it at all. And if you do want to know more, finding any clear, independent and straightforward information is extremely difficult.

Μύ

"The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's new web pages aim to plug the gap – we'll cut through the jargon and present the facts about the Gateway in a clear, concise and easily accessible way.

Μύ

"Plus we'll be hearing from the people who live there about what they think, along with photo and video galleries and quizzes, spoof films, songs and games – something for everyone."

Μύ

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ South East Thames Gateway website goes online on Monday 19 February at bbc.co.uk/thamesgateway.
