Eastern Africa regional winners for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Africa Radio Awards

The momentum of the first ever Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Africa Radio Awards continues with the announcement of its Eastern Africa regional winners.

Μύ

The competition celebrates the excellence of English language radio journalism in Africa.

Μύ

A panel of judges listened to hours of entries at British Council offices in Dar es Salaam to decide which radio stations and journalists will go through to the competition's pan-African awards final in Nairobi, Kenya in May 2007.

Μύ

The Eastern Africa judging panel were chosen for their professionalism, knowledge of the media and passion for radio.

Μύ

They include the newly appointed Managing Director of Tanzanian Broadcasting Services, Tido Mhando, Ugandan-born Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ presenter, Alex Jakana, and Kenyan writer and conservationist, Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor.

Μύ

Also on the panel was Kenyan computer programme manager, Sarah Simons, who entered and won an essay competition on the subject How Radio Changed My World on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's interactive breakfast programme, Network Africa.

Μύ

Those going through to the finals by category are:

Μύ

  • New Radio Station of the Year
    Radio Pacis who proved that they are truly a community radio station by the programmes they broadcast from the town of Arua in Northern Uganda;

  • News Journalist of the Year
    Esther Mbondo from KBC in Kenya highlighted the sometimes forgotten stories of children who are abandoned by their families at the Kenyatta National Hospital;

  • Sports Journalist of the Year
    James Mwangi Wokabi from Capital FM in Kenya who submitted ambitious stories including a joint interview with the great sporting rivals, Paul Tergat of Kenya and Haile Gebreselassie of Ethiopia;

  • Local On-Air Campaign of the Year
    Radio Waumini from Kenya for the creative campaign educating and empowering the public on issues around HIV and Aids;

  • Interactive/Talk Show of the Year
    The radio show, Chit Chat, on Capital FM in Kenya discussed the culturally taboo subject of domestic violence;

  • Young Broadcaster of the Year
    Rita Regina Maina from Hot FM in Kenya confidently dealt with the taboo subject of polygamy and its connection to the spread of HIV and Aids.

Μύ

The judges did not select a winner for the Radio Station of the Year category because the material submitted did not meet competition standards.

Μύ

The Southern Africa regional winners were announced on 13 February.

Μύ

The Western Africa regional heats will be announced in Accra, Ghana on 20 February.
