Rupinder Virdee's winning photograph

Diversity wins day as Asian Network asks "What represents your Asian Britain today?"

The winning picture of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Asian Network "What's Your Asian Britain" competition is Rupinder Virdee from Coventry with her picture of her dad embracing her sister's newly acquired English father-in-law at a mixed-culture marriage.

Μύ

Rupinder said of her picture: "Now that's what I call proud to be British and proud to be Asian!"

Μύ

British Asians have made their mark on Britain for more than 60 years. From chicken tikka masala to Bollywood film, Asian influences are peppered all across Britain, in the mainstream as well as in Asian communities.

Μύ

Asian Network presenters invited listeners to send in the pictures and memories of what they think represents Asian Britain today, whether it be pictures of themselves, their families, food, lifestyle, music or even the street they live on.

Μύ

This competition also represents a success story for the Asian Network as traditionally it has been difficult to mobilise Asian audiences into interacting with media through email, phone or text.

Μύ

This is the first online competition run by the Asian Network that has really captured the imagination of its listeners.

Μύ

More than 200,000 page impressions were recorded on the photography website feature in just under two weeks and record numbers of listeners entered and voted.

Μύ

In eight days the Asian Network received 180 text picture entries and 161 entries on email, with some attaching more than one image.

Μύ

Nearly 1,800 votes were placed in three days of voting.

Μύ

Rupinder's winning photograph shows both sides of the family sharing traditions, from the shared wearing of Western clothes to the shared offering of ceremonial garlands.

Μύ

Rupinder said of her win: "This is amazing! It's made my Christmas. I am really proud of this photograph as it shows a real integration and everyone in the picture is enjoying themselves."

Μύ

Rupinder's winning photograph will be made up onto a large canvas and she will be invited to the Sonia Deol show as a VIP guest in the New Year.

Μύ

Sonia Deol said: "This picture is saying much more than just two men hugging. I can see two very different cultures embracing in a very positive way."

Μύ

Runner-up Sukhbinder Singh of Leicester entered a picture that also represents multi-cultural Britain, showing Asian and English children playing on a beach.
