Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra offers music masterclasses to schools by video-conferencing

Schoolchildren across Scotland will tune into distant learning with a difference when the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra unveils its unique virtual music masterclasses from Tuesday 12 December.

Μύ

Combining state-of-the-art video-conferencing technology and musical expertise, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ SSO's music masterclasses - presented by a team of musicians from the acclaimed orchestra based at Glasgow City Halls - will beam direct to schools in Barra, Islay, Dumfries and Orkney, offering music know-how to pupils as young as seven-years-old.

Μύ

There will be two types of fully interactive masterclasses on offer - Primary and Secondary level virtual tuition - both of which are designed to meet the musical needs of pupils with an interest in learning more about music.

Μύ

The Primary school masterclasses will be led by three of the orchestra's woodwind players and will include interactive music exercises and activities that can be developed between lessons.

Μύ

The first students to sample the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ SSO's new music masterclasses will be primary four and five pupils from Castlebay School on Barra, Bowmore Primary in Islay, Papdale Primary on Orkney and St Teresa's Primary in Dumfries.

Μύ

Masterclasses will also be available to Secondary School pupils studying music at a Standard Grade, Higher or Advanced Higher level who will be offered unique one-to-one tuition with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's SSO's virtuoso principle players.

Μύ

The first pupils to receive the unique video-conferencing hail from the Nicholson Institute on Stornoway, Islay High School and Kirkwall Grammar in Orkney.

Μύ

Jennifer Martin, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ SSO's Learning Manager, said: "We place great value on every child having direct access to live music and musicians.

Μύ

"Video-conferencing will bring the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ SSO and its resources to communities who do not have the opportunity to learn from, and work with, orchestral musicians on a regular basis."

Μύ

As well as building closer relations with schools across Scotland, the technology will enable the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ SSO to connect to other international institutions, giving opportunities for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ to video-conference colleges and schools during concert tours.

Μύ

Students will also benefit from one-to-one tuition with musicians prior to orchestra visits, following up their virtual masterclasses with face-to-face lessons.

Μύ

In addition, the National Youth Choir of Scotland will use the facility for auditions in remote communities, and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ SSO has plans to link with the London Symphony Orchestra's own video-conferencing programme in the near future.
