Changes in drama on Radio Cymru

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Wales announced that Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Cymru's daily soap, Rhydeglwys, will come to an end at the end of this year, after seven years on air.

At the moment, the 10-minute soap is broadcast five days a week, from Monday to Friday, with an omnibus edition on Sundays.

The decision follows a detailed review of programme content on the station, the only Welsh language radio station in Wales, as a new drama strategy is drawn up for Radio Cymru.

"Seven years is a long life for any drama series," says Sian Gwynedd, Editor of Radio Cymru, "and our feeling is that Rhydeglwys has come to the end of its life, which is a natural step for any drama.

"Rhydeglwys, or Eileen as it was originally called, has provided ten minutes of drama every day for so many years, with realistic characters and countless twists and turns in the story of village life.

"The writing, acting and producing has consistently been of the highest quality, which is a tribute to the hardworking team behind the series.

"But for some time now, it has become apparent that the series hasn't been performing as well as expected.

"We are looking forward to working with many Rhydeglwys writers and actors on various future drama projects."

Future plans for drama on Radio Cymru include a wider variety of comedy and satire, more original plays by renowned authors, adaptations of some of Wales's literary classics, workshops and courses to nurture new writing talent and providing a stage for award-winning Eisteddfod plays.

Sian Gwynedd is eager to build upon current drama productions.

This year they have included Difrifol, a comedy series with Llyr Ifans taking the lead part, Hotel Metropole by William Owen Roberts, Dyddiadur Dyn Priod, based on Goronwy Jones' novel, Rhacsyn Sam Snape, a comedy series written by Wynford Ellis Owen and individual plays by familiar names such as Dwynwen Berry, Sharon Morgan and Aled Jones-Williams and new authors such as Manon Steffan Ros, Meinir Jones and Bethan Williams. Making the announcement about Rhydeglwys, Sian Gwynedd emphasised that it was an editorial decision, part of a wider review of services on Radio Cymru and that no posts would be under threat in Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Wales Bangor, where the series is produced.
