Alec Newman, Alastair Mackenzie and Nina Sosanya head up the cast in the crime drama The Acid Test (working title), written by James Mavor (Split Second) and based on an original idea by acclaimed Scots crime author Ian Rankin.

Μύ

Set in the heart of Edinburgh and featuring the underbelly of the capital city, the one-off drama is a psychological thriller.

Μύ

It tells the story of hard-boiled detective Jim Buchan - played by Alec Newman (Angel, Murder Rooms, Enterprise) - whose life starts to unravel as he investigates a 100-year-old murder case in the Scottish capital.

Μύ

Alastair Mackenzie (Monarch of the Glen, The Last Great Wilderness) plays Jack Harvey, Buchan's former friend and best-selling crime novelist with something to prove.

Μύ

Buchan's investigation takes him into the dark underworld of Edinburgh's literary past and leads him to question the very nature of his own existence.

Μύ

The shattering truth will bring the lives of these two very different men together and blow them apart.

Μύ

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ FOUR Controller Janice Hadlow says: "It's fantastic that the work of one of the world's most celebrated crime writers is being adapted in such an original way by James Mavor and with such a stellar cast for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ FOUR.

Μύ

"I'm thrilled to welcome Ian Rankin back to the channel."

Μύ

The drama is a journey into the psychological disintegration of a man on the edge.

Μύ

It also stars Nina Sosanya (Sorted, Casanova, Love Actually) as Buchan's detective sidekick Sinead Burns; Richard Wilson (One Foot In The Grave, Born & Bred) as Arthur Conan Doyle; John Sessions (Low Winter Sun, The English Harem) as Professor Bell, an academic who assists the investigation; and Laura Fraser (Casanova, A Knight's Tale) as Clara, Buchan's ex-wife and Harvey's new partner, the woman at the heart of a complicated love triangle.

Μύ

Gaynor Holmes, Producer, says: "It's a real treat to work with such an exciting and unusual script alongside a very talented, predominately Scottish, cast and crew.

Μύ

"As well as filming in and around Edinburgh's beautiful landmarks, we're also going to peal back the surface and take our story into some dark and fascinating places the public don't get to see very often."

Μύ

Filming for The Acid Test (working title) begins in September 2006 in locations around Edinburgh.

Μύ

The 75-minute, one-off drama is scheduled for transmission on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ FOUR and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland in Winter 2006/7.

Μύ

The drama is directed by John McKay whose credits include forthcoming new Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ drama Robin Hood, Life On Mars and the Canterbury Tales.

Μύ

It is produced by Gaynor Holmes and the Executive Producers are Anne Mensah and Richard Fell.

Μύ
