The nation votes for Newlyn Trinity Methodist Chapel - Restoration Village results from second programme revealed
Presenter Griff
Rhys Jones tonight reveals that the nation has
chosen Newlyn Trinity Methodist Chapel in West Cornwall
to be the second building to go through to the final of this year's
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TWO series - Restoration
Village.
Μύ
Last Friday (4 August), in the second episode of the new series, Griff called
upon viewers to make their mark on history and choose between: The
Rope Walk, West Coker, Somerset; Welcombe Barton, Welcombe, Devon;
and Newlyn Trinity Methodist Chapel, Newlyn, West Cornwall.
Μύ
Rev Julyan Drew, of Newlyn Trinity Methodist Chapel, said: "Our grateful thanks
go to everyone who voted to save Trinity Chapel.
Μύ
"It is on the way to a new and
viable future telling Newlyn's story of fishing, of quarrying, of artists
and copper workers, of the men, women and children who lived in the
surrounding streets or sat in its pews.
Μύ
"We still have a long way
to go before restoration is possible so we hope people will continue
to support us right through to the final and beyond."

Newlyn Trinity Methodist Chapel, Newlyn, West Cornwall
Μύ
This Grade II* building is one of the best and most complete early 19th century chapels in Cornwall. Built in 1835, it is an emblematic building as Methodism has played a key role in Cornish working and social life for over 200 years.
Μύ
Used for religious worship until eight years ago, when serious structural problems were identified, the chapel retains its horseshoe gallery, original box pews and original pulpit incorporated into its present rostrum.
Μύ
Following structural repairs and weatherproofing, it is hoped the chapel will find new life as an interpretive centre, celebrating the village's religious, social, industrial and artistic heritage.
Μύ
It will focus particularly on Newlyn's former copper-working and silk-making industries and internationally important School of Painters.
Μύ
This year the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has set aside Β£1.9m for The Restoration Fund to help restore the winners.
Μύ
Nerys Watts, HLF Manager for the South West, said: "Newlyn
Trinity Methodist Chapel is a heritage gem at the very heart of the
community and we're delighted it has gone through to the final.
Μύ
"This new series once again gives the public the chance to have a say on which building receives National Lottery funding through the HLF. I'd like to encourage people from all over the South West to really get behind their finalist and guarantee them a future by pledging their votes."
Μύ
Three more of the nation's threatened architectural treasures in the Midlands
are tonight (11 August) vying for the public vote: All Saints Church,
Beckingham, Lincolnshire; Pennoyer's School, Pulham St Mary, Norfolk; and
Chedham's Yard, Wellesbourne, Warwickshire.
Μύ
Details of local roadshows,
being held this weekend to tie in with the transmission of the episode,
are available at bbc.co.uk/restoration.
Μύ
Next Friday's episode of Restoration Village (18 August) will reveal which of
these will become the third building to go through to the final.
Μύ
Lines are
now open and viewers can vote by calling 09013 600 500.
Μύ
Voting lines are open from 12.01am every Friday for each programme until
midnight on Tuesday.
Μύ
If the building you voted for hasn't won its regional heat, don't give up hope
- it still has a chance. The runner-up with the most votes across the series
will become our eighth finalist and go through to compete for the Restoration
prize fund.
Μύ
Restoration Village is produced by Cheetah Television (part of Endemol UK) for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland.
Μύ
Information on all 21 buildings featured in the series is available through the website on bbc.co.uk/restoration.

Μύ
Notes to Editors
Μύ

Μύ
Monies raised from the voting lines will be used for
the building that receives the most votes in the final provided it
fulfils the conditions set out by the Trustees of The Restoration
Fund. Μύ
