Sandy Smith is to be the new Editor of Panorama, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's flagship current affairs series.

Μύ

He will take over the post at the award-winning Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE programme in September.

Μύ

The appointment comes after the former Editor Mike Robinson announced in March this year that he was to step down and retire from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.

Μύ

Sandy has worked at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ since 1988.

Μύ

The majority of that time has been spent producing and directing programmes for the corporation's current affairs department but since August 2005, he has been Editor of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE programme Watchdog.

Μύ

Helen Boaden, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Director of News, said: "Sandy has great flair in making creative television that delivers provocative, challenging and serious journalism to wide audiences.

Μύ

"His energy and commitment will invigorate and refresh our most important Current Affairs programme."

Μύ

George Entwistle, Head of Current Affairs at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, added: "Sandy is an exciting addition to Current Affairs' strong senior editorial team.

Μύ

"His commitment to original journalism and creative programme-making will ensure Panorama tells the biggest and most relevant stories of our time in an accessible and engaging way."

Μύ

Peter Fincham, Controller of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE, also welcomed the appointment.

Μύ

He said: "Panorama is an iconic brand and Sandy will bring a wealth of energy, creativity and experience to ensuring the programme investigates a variety of subjects in a way which connects with the needs of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE audience."

Μύ

Sandy Smith said: "I am delighted to take over at Panorama which despite its long and illustrious career still has its best years ahead of it.

Μύ

"I have enjoyed my time at Watchdog and will be very sad to part company with such a talented, young team but I am very much looking forward to the challenge ahead."

Μύ

Sandy produced the Panorama Special - London Under Attack following the 7 July bombings in London last year and was Series Producer on News and Current Affairs' three-part series for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TWO, The New al-Qaeda, presented by Peter Taylor, which aired in July and August 2005.

Μύ

In September 2004, he was the Producer/Director of the double Bafta-nominated, The Brighton Bomb and The Hunt for the Bomber.

Μύ

Sandy has substantial experience in international current affairs.

Μύ

He was the Series Producer of Undercover World, a foreign investigations series for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TWO, and worked as a Producer/Director on the foreign affairs series Correspondent.

Μύ

Other credits include launching and series producing Just One Chance, an education series.

Μύ

He was Outside Broadcast Producer on What the World Thinks of America and was Senior Producer on Black Britain.

Μύ

His biggest managerial role to date was as Editor and later Acting Executive Editor at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ London where he led a complete overhaul of the regional TV News programme.

Μύ

Sandy joined the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ as a Producer, then Output Editor, for Newsroom South East and was also News Editor at Greater London Radio from 1993 to 1994.

Μύ

Prior to this he worked on local papers and as a freelance reporter.
