Blue Peter announced the winners of its Storytelling Competition today (Monday 17 October 2005).

Μύ

Launched in September, in association with Arts Council England, the competition provided the opening paragraph to a story or play from seven of the UK's most popular writers, with entrants choosing one or more to develop into a work of their own.

Μύ

Children's Laureate Jacqueline Wilson, Anthony Horowitz, Eoin Colfer and Malorie Blackman all provided the opening paragraph of a story, David Wood provided the opening lines to a play, and Raymond Briggs and Lauren Child the opening images of a picture story.

Μύ

The winning works will now be published in a book later on in the year, to be sold in aid of this year's Blue Peter Appeal.

Μύ

The competition received a staggering 33,000 entries.

Μύ

Blue Peter Editor Richard Marson said: "The Blue Peter Book Club has been so successful that we already knew how much our viewers love reading, but even we were overwhelmed at the massive response to the competition and the standard of the entries.

Μύ

"It's been fantastic to see the level of imagination and enthusiasm for writing. Who knows, maybe we've uncovered the next JK Rowling!"

Μύ

In addition to having their work published and illustrated, the winners will each receive a laptop computer and will be invited to participate in a writing workshop.

Μύ

Five hundred runners-up will receive a signed copy of the new Blue Peter Annual and a competition winner's badge.
