New Autumn schedule on Radio 2

Chris Evans makes his return to Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio on 17 September 2005 with a new show for Radio 2 on Saturday afternoons.
Ìý
The show - highlights of which will also be available as a download and podcast - will go out between 2.00 and 5.00pm.
Ìý
The Autumn schedule also includes a new slot and show for Dermot O'Leary, starting Saturday 17 September, from 5.00 to 7.00pm.
Ìý
Other highlights include a Sir Paul McCartney special recorded in Studio 2 at Abbey Road - where The Beatles made their legendary recordings - on Saturday 17 September from 8.30 to 10.00pm.

Johnny Depp takes a break from filming to present the James Dean story on Tuesday 27 September at 8.30pm and Val Kilmer profiles the life of Marlon Brando on Tuesday 4 October at 8.30pm.

Sunday afternoons see Dale Winton returning with a new run of Pick of the Pops starting on Sunday 18 September at 3.30pm.

Radio 2 presents the world premiere broadcast of the first musical collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - The Likes Of Us on Friday 21 October at 7.30pm.
Ìý
Coinciding with the centenary of his death, The Likes Of Us is the story of the life of Dr John Barnardo - a man whose crusade to rescue children living on the streets became world renowned.

Lesley Douglas, Controller of Radio 2 and 6 Music, says: "Saturdays on Radio 2 will be real appointment listening with Jonathan Ross in the morning, comedy for lunch followed by Chris's new show in the afternoon - and then Dermot with a new exciting music show.

Chris Evans presents a new three hour show for Saturdays.

Chris says: "Saturday afternoon is a great time to be on the radio, people are out and about having fun and we will be there to provide the soundtrack for that fun."

Chris has already presented bank holiday shows for Radio 2 as well as fronting the network's coverage of Live 8.
Ìý
His new show will be packed full of music and features with visitors dropping into the studio.

Chris's show will be the first Radio 2 show available as a download and podcast.
Ìý
Listeners out shopping or at the match on a Saturday afternoon can keep in touch with the show through their mobile phones. A special website for the mobile phone (WAP) allows listeners to see what Chris has been up to.

If listeners miss the show or want to listen to the best bits again they can save highlights onto their portable mp3 players by joining the podcast of the show, or downloading it from Chris's new minisite at bbc.co.uk/radio2.

Dermot O'Leary showcases the best new artists breaking onto the music scene and introduces listeners to the acts who will become the new heartland of the station.

Dermot - who joined Radio 2 last year - says: "The great thing about being on between 5.00 and 7.00pm is that people can listen to us as they get ready for Saturday night.
Ìý
"We want to be the show that people automatically want to share their early evening with, and our content will reflect this."
Ìý
Live performances from established and up and coming artists will be a key part of the show.

Guests booked include Alterkicks on 17 September and the Foo Fighters on 24 September.

On 1 October, Dermot's show comes live from Aberdeen with a special line-up of guests.

Sir Paul McCartney returns to Studio 2 at Abbey Road studios, where The Beatles records were made, for an intimate journey through his songwriting history, from his very first Beatles song to the work on his new album Chaos & Creation In The Backyard.

Sir Paul talks to Radio 2's Mark Radcliffe about his songwriting techniques and shares stories - of his writing partnership with John Lennon, his work with The Beatles and his solo career - before giving a ground breaking solo live performance.
Ìý
Aided by producer Nigel Godrich he uses a selection of vintage instruments from his own collection to re-visit his back catalogue in new and revealing ways in front of a small audience.
Ìý
He re-interprets old songs, reveals new ones, plays cover versions and enlists the audience's help in a demonstration of 'in the moment' songwriting and arranging.

He also shows how Radio 2 inspired this particular burst of creativity by re-creating the 'A Different Perspective' TV trail version of Band On The Run.

Pick of the Pops returns to the Radio 2 airwaves on Sunday afternoons with Dale Winton presenting a new and exciting format.

Every week the show focuses on one particular year.
Ìý
In the first half-hour, Dale covers the highest climbers between numbers 40 to 21, the pick of the new releases from this day of the featured year, and a track from the number one album.

From 4.00 to 5.00pm the show focuses on the Top 20 featuring the cream of the week's chart.
Ìý
The first programme spotlights 1969, with music from David Bowie, The Move, The Rolling Stones, Mama Cass, The Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder, Bobbie Gentry and a host of other great tracks.

Although he died before Elvis had his first hit, Dean's rebellious image has always been associated with rock 'n' roll and he was idolised by musicians like Presley, Bob Dylan and John Lennon, who is quoted as saying "without James Dean, The Beatles would never have existed".

Johnny Depp highlights the artistic passion that drove this country boy from rural Indiana to become a 20th century icon.
Ìý
He starred in only three movies but when he died, aged just 24, his sensitive, violent, moody and tormented portrayal of rebellious youth had inspired a generation of disaffected teenagers.

His dysfunctional childhood and his volatile relationship with his father left severe scars. They affected his relationships with women, his 11 children, and his attitude to his work.

He admitted to being a bad father after his son Christian murdered the boyfriend of his half sister.

The programme looks at both his life and work featuring contributors including Francis Ford Coppola, Bernardo Bertolucci, Arthur Penn, Bud Schulberg (writer of On The Waterfront) and controversial biographer Peter Manso.

Those that knew him intimately are also featured - Ellen Adler (daughter of his great teacher and mentor Stella Adler), dancer Sondra Lee, his agent Jay Kanter and George Englund, partner in his production company.
