Johnny Depp on James Dean

Ìý

Tuesday 27 September: 8.30-9.30pm

Ìý

James Dean is the eternal youthful rebel - the movie idol blessed with the looks, style, talent and attitude that captivated a generation.

Ìý

To mark the 50th anniversary of his death at the wheel of his Porsche on 30 September 1955, Johnny Depp presents this profile of one of Hollywood's most popular icons.

Ìý

Although he died before Elvis had his first hit, Dean's rebellious image has always been associated with rock 'n' roll and he was idolised by musicians like Presley, Bob Dylan and John Lennon, who is quoted as saying "without James Dean, The Beatles would never have existed".

Ìý

Johnny Depp highlights the artistic passion that drove this country boy from rural Indiana to become a 20th century icon.

Ìý

He starred in only three movies but when he died, aged just 24, his sensitive, violent, moody and tormented portrayal of rebellious youth had inspired a generation of disaffected teenagers.

Ìý

The programme features interviews with fans including Morrissey, David Puttnam, David Bailey, Dennis Hopper, Martin Landau, Bill Wyman and Sir Paul McCartney.

Ìý

The Marlon Brando Story presented by Val Kilmer

Ìý

Tuesday 4 October: 8.30-9.30pm

Ìý

Marlon Brando is a genuine icon of modern cinema.

Ìý

His performances in films such as A Streetcar Named Desire, On The Waterfront and The Godfather are the stuff of legend.

Ìý

He transformed screen acting and inspired generations of actors yet he was hounded by demons which haunted him most of his life.

Ìý

His dysfunctional childhood and his volatile relationship with his father left severe scars. They affected his relationships with women, his 11 children, and his attitude to his work.

Ìý

He admitted to being a bad father after his son Christian murdered the boyfriend of his half sister.

Ìý

The programme looks at both his life and work featuring contributors including Francis Ford Coppola, Bernardo Bertolucci, Arthur Penn, Bud Schulberg (writer of On The Waterfront) and controversial biographer Peter Manso.

Ìý

Those that knew him intimately are also featured - Ellen Adler (daughter of his great teacher and mentor Stella Adler), dancer Sondra Lee, his agent Jay Kanter and George Englund, partner in his production company.

Ìý

The programme is presented by American film star Val Kilmer who worked with Brando in The Island Of Dr Moreau and, like so many before him, was inspired by his work.
