Strictly African Dancing

As part of Africa Lives On The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, Natasha Kaplinsky and Martin Offiah present a one-off special event celebrating the culture and history of Africa - Strictly African Dancing.

Μύ

Strictly African Dancing will see six celebrities of African or Caribbean origin each paired with an African dance troupe for intensive training, before performing a traditional African dance live on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE.

Μύ

The six celebrity dancers are officially revealed today as:

Μύ

Tessa Sanderson - Olympic gold-medal winning athlete;

Μύ

Tupele Dorgu - Kelly Crabtree from Coronation Street;

Μύ

Antonia Okonma - Darlene from Bad Girls;

Μύ

Tunde Baiyewu - lead singer of The Lighthouse Family;

Μύ

Robbie Earle - former footballer, and broadcaster;

Μύ

and Louis Emerick - Casualty, Last of the Summer Wine and Brookside.

Μύ

The celebrities learn about the significance of their dance's traditional values, as their troupe teaches them steps and moves that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Μύ

As well as training with an African dance troupe in their particular dance, each celebrity will travel to Africa to find out more about the origins of the dance, its place in the traditional culture of that region and their connection with that heritage.

Μύ

In front of a live studio audience, each celebrity will perform their dance to live music, whilst a panel of experts judge their skills, and viewers at home vote for their favourites.

Μύ

A later results show will reveal which celebrity is crowned champion.

Μύ

Strictly African Dancing is part of Africa Lives On The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.

Μύ

During 2005, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is offering a huge variety of programmes and initiatives across all its services - television, radio and online - broadcasting both within the UK and worldwide to explore and celebrate African life and culture.Μύ

Μύ

By providing a broader representation of life across Africa, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will offer a fresh look at the continent throughout a year dominated by the G8 conference, the Commission for Africa and the 20th anniversary of Live Aid.Μύ

Μύ

Strictly African Dancing is a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Format Entertainment production. The Executive Producer is Karen Smith.
