Young Composers Forum day to meet and share ideas

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms and the Guardian are calling the nation's young composers, aged 12 to 18, to take part in the seventh annual Young Composers competition.

Open to musicians of all styles and genres, the competition is a unique opportunity for aspiring composers to share their work and learn from both professional musicians and their peers.

As part of their prize, winners will have their music performed by top musicians and broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3.

Details of how to enter are at the end of this release. The closing date for entries is 28 May 2005 and results will be announced in The Guardian in late June.

In association with The Guardian, the competition is judged by Fraser Trainer, composer and creative director of the London Sinfonietta; Grammy-nominated British composer Colin Matthews; Artistic Director of the Cheltenham International Festival of Music Martyn Brabbins; composer Tansy Davies; Andrew Kurowski, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Executive Producer for new music; and Peter Kingston of The Guardian, who chairs the panel.

Fraser Trainer comments:"I have been involved in judging this competition for many years now, and am always highly impressed by the amount of young people who choose to express themselves through writing music.

"The competition provides a hugely important platform for young composers to demonstrate their many skills and to share ideas with both experienced composers and other talented youngsters.

Μύ

"These creative and inquiring teenagers are the future of music and I feel very privileged to be part of their development and learning."

Everyone who enters is invited to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms Young Composers Forum on Thursday 28 July, where they have the chance to meet other young composers from around the country, attend talks and workshops, and grill a panel of composers - as well as attend the evening Proms concert in the Royal Albert Hall.

The day will include the Young Composers Concert at the Cadogan Hall, where the winning pieces will be performed by one of the UK's leading ensembles, Endymion.

Μύ

Endymion's performances of the winning pieces are also broadcast during the Proms season on Radio 3 and can be heard on The Guardian's and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms' website.

In addition to the performance and broadcast of their work, the three winners in the under-16 category will receive a Casio keyboard, while the three winners of the over-16 category will receive a Sibelius music software package. In the under-16 category there are also prizes for the winners' schools.
