Six of the best amateur choirs from across Northern Ireland, Scotland
and England have won places in the prestigious final of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ
Radio 3 Choir of the Year 2005, which takes place at the Lowry,
Salford, on 20 February.
Eighteen choirs took part in the semi-finals of the competition last
weekend.
Inverclyde Schools' Junior Choir from Scotland and
the Methodist School Junior Choir from Belfast will
represent the children's category.
St Catherine Singers from Elstree and Farnham
Youth Choir from Surrey represent the youth category and the
White Rosettes from Leeds and the Oriel Singers
from Cheltenham represent the adult.
Roger Wright, Controller, Radio 3, says: "The fact that choirs
from across the length and breadth of the UK have yet again been vying
to reach the final of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 Choir of the Year shows the continuing
appeal of amateur singing today.
"The quality of the finalists is second-to-none and I'm proud
that Radio 3's sponsorship of this important competition both helps
bring the music to a wider audience and also ensures the continuation
of this much-loved event."
The competition's three categories are: children's (ages 14 and under,
supported by Youth Music - a charity which supports music making activities
for young people), youth (25 and under) and adult.
The two choirs in each category will compete for both their category
title and the coveted Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 Choir of the Year 2005 title at the
final.
In addition to the title, the overall winning choir is awarded a commission
for a new choral work sponsored by Radio 3.
The winning choir also goes on to represent the UK in the European
Broadcast Union's Let the Peoples Sing competition.
In a new development this year, Youth Music will make an additional
award of a new commission to the winning children's choir.
