Mark Damazer has been appointed Controller of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 4 and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 7.

He is currently Deputy Director of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ News.

He says: "Being Controller of Radio 4 is the best job in broadcasting and I am privileged to be given the opportunity of working with so many talented and creative people.

"Radio 4 is in terrific shape and my challenge is to cherish it, sustain it and make sure it remains the home for intelligence, flair and wit.

"Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 7 has already made a name for itself and I hope to see it become a must for those who value the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's storehouse of drama and comedy."

Jenny Abramsky, Director of Radio & Music, says: "Mark is a passionate listener and supporter of Radio 4.

"When you talk to him you realise it's in his blood. I'm sure he will build on Helen Boaden's success and take Radio 4 and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 7 to new heights."

As Head of Political Programmes from 1998 to 2000, Mark was in charge of a wide variety of programmes including Yesterday In Parliament and The Westminster Hour.

As a previous Head of Current Affairs, he has also been responsible for File On 4, From Our Own Correspondent and a whole range of Radio 4 documentaries and short series.

He took on the extra duties as Assistant Director, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ News in 1999 and became Deputy Director in 2001.

Mark was born in 1955 and educated at Cambridge where he gained a Double Starred First in History.

He was awarded the Harkness Fellowship to Harvard University.

He is a Board Member of the Institute of Contemporary British History and the Carl Rosa Opera.

Mark is married with two children.

Mark Damazer succeeds Helen Boaden, who is now Director of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ News.
