The outline plan for the digital curriculum service up to the end of September 2008 has been announced today.

The plan sets out, year by year, the subjects for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland following wide consultation between the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and stakeholders across the UK to make sure that the resources produced are appropriate to the curriculum needs of children and young people aged five to 16.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has a strong commitment to serving the needs of all learners.

In addition to accommodating different ability ranges, there will be material to support those with special educational needs in the subject areas of Maths, English, Science and life skills.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is intent on a continuing dialogue with providers in the private sector.

This will ensure that the digital curriculum service complements educational resources available commercially and so enhances the learning experience more fully.

Full details of the plans can be found at bbc.co.uk/info.

The digital curriculum will be a free online service, delivered through broadband and narrowband connections, providing high quality interactive resources designed to stimulate learning at school and at home.

It will be structured around, and based on, current school curricula for five to 16 year olds within the UK.

The service will be available free to anyone with an internet connection, although the benefits of the rich media on offer will be felt most fully by the increasing number of users with broadband access.

The digital curriculum will be launched formally in January 2006.

This public statement complies with the requirement of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to publish outline plans 15 months ahead of launch.
